Why I Prefer a Timeless or Classic Looking Sofa

When I’m designing a room, whether it’s for our own home or for previous clients- I always recommend investing in a sofa with longevity in mind. A sofa can be a big investment and one you’ll want to keep for many years. I try to look for clean lines, quality upholstery, and neutral colors that can evolve as your style changes over time. What I Look for in a Timeless Sofa
My best advice? Start with a neutral sofa you love, then add personality to your living space with an area rug, art, accent chairs, ottomans, pillows, throws, surrounding decor, etc. You’ll get more mileage out of your investment. Here are five characteristics I look for when choosing a sofa with longevity in mind…
- Size… Carefully check the dimensions and use a tape measure to ensure it fits your floor plan. I also like to check the measurements to make sure my family will be able to lounge comfortably. Does it have a deep seat? What about the arm height? These measurements all factor into comfort and your personal preference.
- Form… I opt for simple, classic silhouettes with no overly trendy details. I’m purchasing a sofa for the long haul and don’t want it to go out of style.
- Arm & Leg Style… Similarly, I look for classic arm and leg styles. From timeless tapered wood legs or a pleated box skirt to a rolled English arm or simple square arm, I’m keeping my eyes peeled for simplistic, yet elevated details.
- Fabric… I’m partial to natural or performance fabrics, when it comes to sofa selection. Neutrals also have better longevity and can withstand multiple renovations or the evolution of your personal aesthetic at home. Neutral fabric won’t feel dated in 5 years.
- Construction… When it comes to construction, I’m looking for quality materials that age gracefully and clean easily. Bonus points if the sofa has a kiln dried frame, down wrapped cushions, or is made in North Carolina.

FAQ
I totally get that! However, I’ve purchased all of my sofas online… here’s how I do it. Pay close attention to the measurements (arm height, seat height & depth, overall width, back height, etc). Next, examine the construction. Down filled or down wrapped cushions are my preference for comfort (if you like to sink into your sofa). If you’re looking for more structure to sit upright, look for a tight back and more shallow seat. It really boils down to cross checking your personal preferences with the sofa specifications.
Spot clean with an upholstery-safe cleaner, or opt for slipcovered designs you can toss in the wash. For deeper maintenance, check out my tutorial: how to deep clean upholstery and refresh your living room.
Tape out the dimensions using painter’s tape or kraft paper on the floor. Don’t forget to measure doorways and stairs to make sure you can get into your home! That’s a step many people neglect.
These are my personal favorite classic arm styles: saddle arm, rolled English arm, sloped arm, square arm, and petite track arm.
