Every spring, like clockwork, I get the itch to refresh our outdoor living spaces… and I’m always a smidge early. Whether it’s adding a few new plants to the patio, swapping out our window planters, or simply restocking my favorite gardening essentials, a trip to Lowe’s is always my go-to that puts me in the mood for spring. They have everything I need for the season- plus it’s one of the few places I can shop for both functional and aesthetically pleasing garden goods. In today’s post, I’m sharing my curated spring garden picks from Lowe’s- think timeless essentials, my favorite low-maintenance plants, and a few hidden gems that make outdoor living feel extra beautiful. Whether you’re starting from scratch or are just looking to spruce things up, here are some of my current favorite gardening essentials and spring picks from Lowe’s.

Container Garden Must-Haves
- Classic Clay or Terra Cotta Planters – These neutral, textural pots are perfect for layering on patios or steps.
- Pedestal Planters – Pedestal planters have such a beautiful shape for planting florals that spill over the edge. They’re ideal for the front porch, flanking a door, or making a statement.
- Rolling Plant Caddies – For easy rearranging and sun chasing throughout the day. I like that you can’t see them, but they make patio plants more functional.
Design Tip: Try grouping planters of the same color or material in varying sizes and heights for a curated, designer look.
Plants I Always Gravitate Toward
- Boxwoods – For structure and year-round greenery.

My Spring Planting & Outdoor Cleaning Routine
Each spring, I do a quick assessment of our outdoor areas: what needs cleaning, replaced, or refreshed? Then I head to Lowe’s with a list (and let’s be honest, I always come home with a few extras). Here’s what I focus on each spring…
- Edge, clean up landscaping, fertilize, and prune plants (if needed).
- Clean or replace old planters (take stock of what I have versus what needs replaced).
- Add seasonal color with new flowers (window boxes, front porch planters, raised beds, containers, etc).
- Restock or top mulch and soil for raised beds, containers, and landscaping.
- Clean up our outdoor living spaces (leaf blow, power wash, style the patio furniture and accessories) for the season ahead.
If you’re working with a small space, even just a few updates- like a new planter or fresh herbs for your window sill can go a long way.

In Salt Lake City (zone 6), it’s safe to start planting after the last frost- typically late April, but many people say wait until after Mother’s Day (just to be safe from snow). However, Lowe’s makes it easy by labeling plants with growing zones and seasonal guidance. I always check the labels!
