7 Sustainable Futons & Sleeper Sofas For Small Spaces (2025)

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our editors have spent the last ten years reviewing nontoxic mattresses and furniture. These are our picks for sleeper sofas that are ethically made with natural and organic materials.

After spending 20 minutes blowing up a cheap Target air mattress with a hairdryer the last time we had overnight guests, my partner and I agreed that the next time we buy a new sofa, it should be a sleeper.

And why wouldn’t we want a bit of extra sleeping space to comfortably host overnight guests? (Especially when it means we don’t need to store a big air mattress in the closet that’ll inevitably get a hole in a couple years?) Well, pull-out couches are infamously clunky pieces of furniture. They get a bad rap — if the couch part isn’t uncomfortable, then the mattress part (that comes creaking out on springs) is, and the whole thing is notoriously heavier than an already heavy normal couch.

The thing is, sleeper sofas aren’t always like that anymore. Recent design innovations make for some pretty clever futons and sleepers — many are made of high-density foam and flip right out into a full or queen-size mattress. And they typically take up less room when folded out than the pull-out couches of yore.

So many of our favorite home goods brands — ones that make frames out of solid wood, cushions out of latex or eco-friendly foams, and upholstery out of natural or performance fabrics designed to last a lifetime — also make some of the cleverish pull-out couches we’ve seen. Read on for our favorite sustainable sleeper sofas.

Why shop for a sustainable and nontoxic sleeper sofa?

When shopping for big-ticket items, we look for sustainable and nontoxic pieces because they’re good for both us and our planet. Furniture made of natural materials like solid wood, latex or down cushions, and natural fabric upholstery like cotton or linen is gentler on the planet to produce, won’t offgas harmful chemicals in our homes or in a landfill, and lasts longer because it’s higher quality — which makes it gentler on our wallets in the long run, too. We’re always looking for furniture made by hand in North American factories, too, to reduce our shipping footprint and support local craftspeople.

What are the relevant certifications?

Certifications to keep an eye out for when furniture shopping include GOTS or GOLS to ensure organic fabrics like cotton, linen, or wool and organic latex. Greenguard and Oeko Tex Standard 100 ensure a safe finished product that’s free of harmful chemicals, and FSC means the wood in the furniture was sustainably harvested. We also love companies like B Corps that put ethics front and center.

Our criteria

We’ve personally tested and researched the top nontoxic and organic furniture and mattress brands. For this list, we’ve selected our favorite sustainable futons and sleeper sofas using safe and sustainable materials and manufacturing processes that will last a lifetime. We continually add new picks to the list that meet the criteria below.

  • SUSTAINABLE/ECO-FRIENDLY | Made with natural, organic, recycled, and responsibly sourced materials, these sleeper sofas are better for our indoor environment and our planet.
  • DURABLE | Each of these brands are made of long-lasting, durable, and high quality materials that will retain their shape and integrity for years to come.
  • AFFORDABLE | Sleeper sofas can be pricey, and nontoxic ones can be even more expensive — fortunately, there are tons of sustainable and clean couches that are beautiful, functional, and within your budget.

They’re one of the only furniture brands on the market that combines true, transparent sustainability with fairly accessible price points. They craft their furniture out of hardwood and other sustainable, nontoxic materials like hemp, linen, and recycled polyester, all in their U.S. factories, and they’re even a certified B Corp. West Elm’s futons and sleeper sofas have a huge range in price, size, and style. Some, like the Booker futon, make large couches — this one is 92 inches long, but we love how it folds down into a queen size futon that doesn’t take up as much room as a traditional pull-out couch. It’s handcrafted with sustainably sourced, FSC-certified wood that’s been kiln-dried for extra durability, and it comes in dozens of different fabric options (many of which are linen). We also love West Elm’s trundle sleepers, like this Whitman sofa which pulls out into a queen size bed. And they made plenty of traditional pull-out couches, too, many of which are handcrafted with FSC-certified wood. Most couches clock in under $2,000, and have incredible variety in fabric options so you can customize it to match with any space.

And they make several different sleeper sofas depending on your space and size needs. You can choose between full and queen sized sleepers — their full sized sleepers are 72 inches long, while the queen ones have a length of 84 inches. They make a couple of sleeper sectionals, too, that give you an extra queen-size sleeping space without taking up any extra space in your living room. Some sofas are ready to ship while others are made to order, and they all come in upholstery options like recycled faux fur, a cotton-linen blend, and a recycled poly weave — with the most adorable color options to boot.

5. Burrow

Burrow’s furniture is all about functionality and quality — they use performance fabrics and modular designs for their pieces that are easy to assemble, arrive at your door in days, and often include thoughtful features like hidden chargers or storage compartments. To that end, they made a couple sleep sofa options designed to be a total breeze to use. The Shift Sleeper is no more than seven feet long, but flips out into a true queen size bed (made of four-layer CertiPUR-US® foam) in seconds — no clunky spring mechanism needed. The arm cushions even double at standard size pillows. We love their Span Sleeper, too — it’s a sectional that flips out into a queen bed, just like the Shift, while its chaise has handy storage where you can keep your extra sheets and blankets. Burrow even makes “sleep kits” that turn any couch into a twin bed instantly, with a foam topper, sheets, a lightweight duvet, a pillow, and an eyemask.

Customer Review | “The sleeper functionality is a game-changer — easy to pull out and unbelievably comfortable for guests. Plus, the hidden storage is incredibly spacious and keeps everything organized without compromising the clean aesthetic. And we love how their styles lean mid-century modern, for a sleek yet classic look that’ll never go out of style. They offer a wide range of sleep sofas — from loveseats that pull out into twin beds to full-length couches that pull out into queens. And while they make plenty of traditional pull-out couches with mattresses inside, we especially love their flip-out options like this Sebastian sofa bed. 7. The Futon Shop

FSC

Handcrafted

Made to order

USDA organic

Best For | Traditional futons of 100% natural materials
Organic & Eco-Friendly Certifications | FSC, GOLS, USDA organic
Features | Solid wood frames and natural mattresses
Sizes Available | Full, queen
Price | Starting at $460 for a frame, $650 for a mattress

The Futon Shop specializes in — you guessed it — traditional futons. While we also love the futon shop for its many tatami mat and floor mattress options, they carry plenty of different models of solid wood futon frames and futon mattresses, too. Note that the frames and mattresses are sold separately. Many of their frames, like their Tokyo Bi-Fold Japanese Wood Futon Frame, are crafted in North America of sustainably harvested FSC-certified wood. Others, like their Cornerstone Wood Amish Futon Frame, are made by Amish artisans in Pennsylvania. Most frames come with a choice of finishes, like oak, walnut, or maple, and they all lay back to form either a full or queen-sized bed when you have overnight guests. The futon mattresses also come in a range of choices — some are made of organic latex, some of organic wool (from North American farms), and some of pure organic cotton, and others still are made of some combo of the three natural materials. The Futon Shop carries a handful of traditional sleeper sofas, too — our fave is the Eco Sofa Bed, made of nothing but natural materials like solid wood, latex, wool, coconut coir, and upholstery of cotton, hemp, or linen.
