Where we catch our zzz’s is where we spend a third of our lives — so we recommend investing in the best of the best when it comes to mattresses. Most mattresses include petroleum-based foams, toxic flame retardants, pesticides, and other gases/chemicals that can be dangerous to our health, especially night after night. Instead, we can opt for vegan, all-natural mattresses that will keep us sleeping soundly and healthy — without harming people, planet, or animals.
Why consider a vegan mattress?
Vegan mattresses are a wonderful choice for their ethical and cruelty-free production. Traditional mattresses typically use animal by-products such as wool and silk, and opting to go vegan supports the humane treatment of animals by avoiding the use of these materials. Vegan mattresses can also be more eco-friendly and sustainable through the use of recycled materials and more natural alternatives like organic latex and plant-based foams. And for those with wool allergies, you’ll be pleased to know that vegan mattresses can avoid your triggers and are often completely hypoallergenic!
What materials should you look for in a vegan mattress?
- Natural Latex (vegan-certified, not blended with wool): Best for hot sleepers and those who want both cushioning and bounce; it’s very durable and naturally resistant to allergens, but it can be heavy, pricey, and should be rotated a few times a year to prevent impressions.
- Organic Cotton: Ideal for people with allergies, sensitive skin, or those who prefer a firmer feel; it’s breathable and sustainable, though it may compress over time and needs occasional fluffing or rotation to maintain comfort.
- Organic Hemp: Great for eco-conscious sleepers and those who like firm support; it’s antimicrobial and extremely durable, but can feel stiffer than cotton or latex and may not suit side sleepers who need more pressure relief.
- Bamboo Fiber (or Bamboo-Derived Rayon, if processed responsibly): Works well for hot sleepers thanks to its cooling properties; it’s soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking, but can lose structure faster than cotton and requires a mattress protector to extend its lifespan.
- Coconut Coir (Coconut Husk Fibers): Best for back or stomach sleepers who prefer a firmer, supportive surface; it’s breathable and resists mold, but can feel too hard for side sleepers and may need a latex or cotton layer for comfort.
- Recycled Steel Coils (in hybrid vegan mattresses): Suitable for combination sleepers who want support and responsiveness; coils add airflow and structure, though they can make mattresses heavier and sometimes noisier over time.
