We’ve lived on sustainable couches and sofas for years — these are our favorite brands that are non-toxic, use natural fabrics and ethical manufacturing, and are super durable.
Whether you’re working from home (and skipping the desk for the day) or just kicking back for an evening of Netflix, your sustainable couch is a major player in your comfort. And second only to our kitchens, living rooms and thus our couches, are a key spot for connecting with the people we share our homes with — roommates, partners, kids, and pets included. 🛋️
Why consider a non-toxic couch?
Unfortunately, many conventional couches contain harmful chemicals like flame retardants, formaldehyde, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can off-gas into the air and contribute to indoor air pollution. Over time, exposure to these toxins has been linked to various health issues, including respiratory problems, allergies, and even cancer. Phantila Phataraprasit, co-founder and CEO of Sabai, says, “Sustainable and nontoxic couches support your health, the health of those involved in making the pieces, and the planet. By avoiding harmful chemicals like flame retardants, formaldehyde, and VOCs, you foster better indoor air quality and reduce the risk of long-term health issues.” In the case of a fire, choosing non-toxic furniture can also prevent additional damage and lessen any contributions to negative air quality outside, too. Opting for a non-toxic couch made from natural or certified low-emission materials helps minimize exposure to these harmful substances, promoting a safer and healthier living space for all!
What sustainable materials are used for an eco-friendly couch?
Eco-friendly couches often incorporate sustainable materials such as organic cotton, hemp, linen, recycled poly, sustainably sourced and FSC certified wood, natural latex, and recycled metal. These materials are chosen for their minimal environmental impact and renewable properties. Organic cotton, linen, and hemp reduce reliance on pesticides and fertilizers, while recycled poly diverts plastic waste from landfills. FSC-certified wood ensures responsible forestry practices, and natural latex provides a biodegradable alternative to synthetic foams. Recycled metal further offers renewable and recycled options for upholstery and frames. By opting for couches made from these eco-friendly materials, we can support environmentally conscious practices while enjoying furniture that is both stylish and sustainable. Phataraprasit also notes that eco-consciousness can also come in the form of the design of the product and programs for repairing or reselling the pieces down the line.
What is our review process?
Each brand on this list has been individually reviewed by one of our editors. Unlike other review sites, we bring these couches, pillows, and ottomans into our homes and live on them for months (sometimes years!) to see how they hold up and feel over time. Our top considerations are health and safety, comfort, environmental impact, durability, and long-term value. In addition to hands-on testing, we tour factories, investigate certifications, interview brands, scour online reviews, and survey our own readers for your preferences. We’ve got your back when it comes to finding the best nontoxic couch for your home.

Our editors’ main criteria when shopping for nontoxic couches 🔎
What are the relevant certifications?
Third-party certified furniture brands add an extra layer of credibility when it comes to the safety of your new couch. These certifications can also indicate what sustainable and ethical processes are being followed throughout the production process. Phantila Phataraprasi, co-founder and CEO of Sabai reminds us that, “Most couches won’t be certified on the product level, but on the materials level” — so we keep an eye out for the following when we’re reviewing:
- 1% for the Planet: Brands that are members of 1% for the Planet donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, which is a bonus when we’re looking for sustainable furniture options.
- CertiPUR-US: While CertiPUR-US doesn’t consider organic or natural materials, it does set a nontoxic standard for the flexible polyurethane foam used in many hybrid and memory foam mattresses. This certification ensures that foams meet safety standards and are made without ozone depleters, flame retardants, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates, and have low VOC emissions.
- GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton and other textile components. Textile products must be made from 95% certified organic raw materials to become GOTS Certified. GOTS also requires stringent worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor. GOTS’ rigorous certification process requires their environmental and social criteria are met throughout the entire textile supply chain.
- FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) – FSC certification ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.
- GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your couch meets some of the world’s most comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air.
- OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is a consistent, independent testing and certification system that ensures every component of your furniture is free from harmful substances (from raw materials to the final product).
- B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. To become a B Corp, organizations must be verified through B Lab, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable global economy.
- Climate Neutral Certified: Climate Neutral Certified brands measure and offset their entire carbon footprint and implement plans to reduce future emissions. While some companies claim to be carbon-negative by removing more carbon than they emit, it’s important to note that it is not an official certification.
- Fair Trade Certification: One of the most meticulous social standards, the Fair Trade certification means that your couch’s materials are sourced ethically and workers are paid fair wages.
- PETA-Approved Vegan: The PETA-Approved Vegan certification assures shoppers that no animal products were used in the manufacturing process (such as wool). Many organizations offer other vegan certifications, too, like the Vegan Action certification. It’s best to review that the entire product is vegan and not just a handful of the components.
What are the best natural fabrics?
- Organic Cotton: Grown with no toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or genetically modified seeds. Tends to use less water than conventional cotton.
- Organic Linen: Made of fast-growing flax, organic linen uses no synthetic fertilizer or pesticides, requires little water, and produces little waste.
- Organic Hemp: Similar to linen, organic hemp uses little water and no synthetic fertilizer or pesticides, and is nice and durable.
- Wool: Biodegradable, durable, and renewable, wool is a great temperature regulator, too.
- Eucalyptus: Faster-growing eucalyptus trees are used to make Tencel, a semi-synthetic fabric that produces little waste and is still biodegradable.
- Bamboo: Bamboo is a fast-growing, regenerative crop that requires little or no fertilizer or pesticides.
- For the interior of our couches, we look for natural latex, recycled post-consumer fill, coconut fiber, and other emerging eco-friendly and safe options.
- For the frames of our couches, we look for sustainably sourced wood, reclaimed wood, and recycled metals that are not treated with harmful chemical finishes.
