Tract homes have a reputation for being “cookie-cutter,” but there are plenty of ways to give them personality, and this Moorpark, California, house is proof it can be done. The four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom home was a bit dated and dull, but it had potential—it was located on a quiet street with lots of natural light and its layout could be reworked.

“While the layout had promise, it didn’t quite function in a way that felt thoughtful or welcoming,” explains Madison Lussier of Madison Nicole Design. “The kitchen and bathrooms felt especially disjointed and didn’t reflect the warm, layered environment the clients envisioned. It was a blank canvas that needed intentional updates to bring it to life.”

The homeowners are a couple who primarily reside in Chicago but purchased the home as a second residence for extended family use, so they wanted the space to feel “serene, timeless, and deeply comfortable.”

The inspiration for the home’s design was rooted in soft textures, traditional touches, and a sense of warmth. “The clients were drawn to warm natural materials and a soft, neutral palette—something elegant but lived-in, with charm and character. They wanted the home to feel collected, approachable, and easy to live in, with thoughtful details throughout,” Madison adds.

Madison and team completed a full-scale renovation, touching every surface of the home. New flooring, lighting, and custom millwork was installed throughout the home.

The disjointed kitchen was redesigned to feel more open and functional—the layout was reworked, custom cabinetry was installed, and a walk-in pantry space was added.

The two main living spaces also contain new custom cabinetry, which was both a functional and stylish choice as it provided new storage and gave each room a grounding focal point. The primary bathroom was transformed into a tranquil retreat with organic textures and soft finishes.

“Throughout the home, we added charm and character through architectural detailing and furnishings that feel timeless but relaxed,” says Madison.

Every renovation decision was important in shaping the home’s personality, but there is one sweet detail that is a favorite of Madison’s: the custom dog wash in the backyard. “The clients are big animal lovers and wanted to incorporate something special for their pets,” says Madison. “We used a lot of different zellige tiles throughout the home, and were able to use the remnants for the dog bath. We paired this with unlacquered brass fixtures to give it a stylish, elevated feel while still being totally functional. Despite its more utilitarian use, we love the way that the style of it still connects so deeply with the interior, and also serves as a fun feature in the backyard.”

The home is now warm and inviting—it definitely isn’t “cookie-cutter” anymore. “The house feels peaceful, personal, and beautifully layered. It was important to them that the space feel welcoming and well-loved, and seeing that come to life has made the entire process incredibly rewarding,” Madison says of the owners.
