New in Stock: Multi-Stem Trees, Evergreen Shrubs, and More

Unpack our latest delivery with us

In July we went to visit our Italian grower to hand select plants for the coming seasons. We have been working with growers in Pistoia, Italy for many years and choose to work with this grower because they share our ethos for growing exceptional, quality plants.

The first of these hand-picked plants arrived at the start of the month – unpack it with us to see the highlights of that we now have in stock!

Evergreen multi-stem trees including Holly and Osmanthus

Multi-stem trees offer a more sculptural and naturalistic look than single-stem trees.

Their multiple trunks, often twisted and gnarled, create a unique, artistic focal point in any garden. Because they are often wider and not as tall as single-stem trees, they can provide a significant visual impact without overwhelming a smaller garden. They bridge the gap between a traditional tree and a shrub.

Multi-stem trees, especially when purchased at a mature size like ours, can provide the grandeur and presence of a much older tree more quickly than a single-stem specimen. With a broader, denser canopy formed by multiple stems, these trees are excellent specimens for creating focal points or providing privacy screens.

On this delivery, we had Ilex cornuta, Osmanthus aquifolium and Osmanthus x fortunei.

Ilex cornuta, or Chinese Holly is evergreen providing a constant source of deep, glossy green in the garden, even through the bleakest winter months.

Osmanthus makes a great multistem specimen with dark green leaves year round and tiny, unassuming flowers that release a sweet aroma. Their textured bark creates yet more interest and pairs well underplanted with Hakonechloa macra.

Birch are famous for their beautiful, often brilliant white bark that peels away in papery layers. This bark provides year-round visual interest, especially in winter when other trees have lost their leaves. The contrast of the white bark against a green lawn or a blue sky is very striking.

Our 6m tall multistem Betula pendula brings instant impact creating a dramatic visual effect. Their open canopy allows you to grow a variety of plants underneath, such as ferns, hostas, and spring bulbs.

Red Robin (Photinia) shrubs

An ever popular and quick-growing evergreen shrub known for the vibrant red colour of new foliage in spring that often continues through summer. The red provides a fantastic contrast to the mature, glossy dark green leaves making it an eye-catching hedge. Tolerant to pruning, it’s easy to maintain a formal shape and size while it’s dense foliage acts as a good windbreak. Red Robins can be grown in large containers making it suitable for patios or balconies.

Bamboos

Bamboo often gets a bad rap for being invasive, but with careful planning and the right varieties, it can be a stunning and beneficial addition to your garden.

Its tall, slender stems create a visually striking vertical element, adding depth and texture to your landscape. Whether you’re aiming for a tropical paradise or a minimalist modern design, bamboo’s graceful presence can elevate your garden’s aesthetic.

Hedging Conifers

Most conifers are evergreen, meaning they keep their foliage throughout the year. This provides constant privacy, acting as a natural screen from neighbours or a busy road. Unlike deciduous hedges that lose their leaves in winter, conifers offer continuous cover.

The dense, often feathery or scaly foliage of conifers creates a thick and effective barrier. This not only provides a visual screen but also acts as a windbreak and can help to muffle noise from traffic or other sources.

Conifers can be easily clipped and shaped, making them perfect for creating formal, structured hedges. They provide a strong architectural backbone to a garden and can be used to create well-defined spaces, borders, or backdrops for other plants.

Pleached Trees

Pleached trees have become increasingly popular in modern garden design. They create an elevated “green wall” or “hedge on stilts” that provides immediate privacy. This is particularly valuable in urban and suburban gardens where space is limited and neighbouring properties are close. They block unwanted views into your garden without the need for a towering fence or hedge that would take up too much ground-level space.

Their clean lines and geometric shape can be used to create formal avenues, define garden “rooms,” or act as a striking backdrop for other plants. This structured look is highly sought after in contemporary garden design.
