Something fishy’s happening in the interior design world—literally. While tinned fish like sardines and anchovies have been typically been considered something we’d eat off of our plates, we’ve been noticing tinned fish decor has been sprouting up everywhere. Napkins? Coasters? Serving platters? That’s right, everywhere.
If you ask Julia Newman, who runs a decorating firm called Julia Adele Design in Los Angeles, the budding sardinecore microtend is a “charming and nostalgic” extension of the coastal grandmother and coastal grandpa styles that have been all the rage in recent years. The former is all about a light, breezy vibe, while the latter conjures visions of a fashionable fisherman’s shack. And as for sardinecore? Well, it lies somewhere in the middle, making it fun, personality-packed decor that can fit nicely with a range of design styles. And unlike coastal grandmother and grandpa looks—which seem strictly reserved for summer—sardine accessories can have year-round appeal.
But while sardinecore is certainly having a moment, Newman reminds us it’s a microtrend and should be used sparingly. Instead of covering all your walls in a bold, tinned fish wallpaper, focus on smaller doses. “It’s best to incorporate the sardine motif through timeless accessories that can be used and mixed in over the years,” Newman recommends. “I especially love how it plays out in the kitchen—salt and pepper shakers, platters, napkin rings, linens, serving dishes—it all just makes perfect sense there.”
Want to bring a taste of sardinecore to your space? Look no further. To help, we picked out a few standout accessories worth adding to your cart, pronto. Fishy, but make it fashionable.
