Our editors have lived in sustainable fashion for a decade — these are our favorite men’s brands that use eco-friendly materials and ethical production.
In a world where women’s clothing is the guiding compass when it comes to fashion, men’s clothing often falls by the wayside. For those with specific tastes, men’s fashion has far fewer options and is not as widely available online and in stores. For someone like my husband, Cole, who loves to dress well and wear high-quality clothing, shopping has become a challenge, especially when it comes to sustainability.
A couple of years ago, Cole began to notice the problems with synthetic fibers and transitioned his wardrobe to natural fabrics only. This aligned with the desire to support brands focused on creating earth-conscious staples. However, as a full-time working dad of two little ones, shopping had become something he had no time for. For this guide, he wanted to set up a sustainable wardrobe once and for all, while also making it easier for others to compare fit, quality, and support earth-conscious brands.
What are the relevant certifications?
When a sustainable brand is proud of the work they’re doing to protect the earth, they’ve gone through dedicated and rigorous testing to receive certifications. By earning one, they will proudly display these credentials on their website, making it easier to spot genuine sustainability efforts versus greenwashing.
- GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
- Fair Trade — Fair Trade Certified (USA)
- WFTO — World Fair Trade Organization
- Fairtrade International
- Bluesign®
- GRS — Global Recycled Standard
- B Corporation Certification
- The Climate Label
- RWS — Responsible Wool Standard
- RDS — Responsible Down Standard
- SA8000 — Social Accountability Standard
Many of the brands listed below hold multiple certifications, confirming their commitment to genuine sustainability.
Our criteria & methodology:
For each of the brands below, Cole considered whether each piece would be seasonally supportive for living in the mountains, along with wearability for less outdoorsy moments. He works from home but prides himself in maintaining a polished appearance, both on Zoom and in his daily life. He leans toward high-quality basics that fit him well and outfits that are not only stylish but also transitional for doing guy stuff in the mountains of Colorado, like walking the dog, chopping wood, or wrestling with the kids. For him, high-quality means he can wear a shirt a hundred times and it will hold up.
When it comes to investing in wardrobe staples, he wants the clothing he buys to stand the test of time. Cole doesn’t like to update his wardrobe each season and would prefer to wear the pieces he likes throughout the year, too, so he chose mostly all-weather options. Cole and The Good Trade editors selected the brands on this list based on the criteria below — and then he put each of these brands to the test by wearing them to work, on the weekends, and everything in between.
- ECO-FRIENDLY & RECYCLED MATERIALS | All of our listed brands utilize eco-friendly materials like recycled poly, organic cotton, and Tencel to ensure they remain as low-impact as possible.
- ETHICAL PRODUCTION | Each of these sustainable men’s fashion brands adheres to strict ethical production practices, including implementing fair wages and safe working conditions throughout their factories.
- TIMELESS STYLES | For a long-lasting wardrobe that stays in style and’ll have you looking your most confident, we look to these sustainable men’s fashion brands!

1. Toad & Co
Best For | High-quality fabrics
Product Range | Tops, pants, sweaters, jackets
Size Range | S–XXL
Price Range | $60 (t-shirt)–$200 (jacket)
Toad & Co began in 1996 in a garage in Colorado. Since then, they’ve been dedicated to building a steadfast foundation fueled by social good, giving-back initiatives, and environmentally friendly clothing. You’re not going to find synthetics or cheaply made clothing at Toad & Co. Their clothes are made to last from eco fibers like organic cotton, hemp, TENCEL, and recycled fabrics. Their third-party certifications keep restricted substances out of their clothing and ensure you’re investing in a brand that does more than just make clothes.
Cole’s Review | “I love these Toad & Co pieces: Men’s Bitterroot Henley, S ($98) and Rockland Long Sleeve Shirt, S, ($130). Both the button-up and the Henley have this thick, warm material that wraps you in a hug. I love that the colors have a lot of character and really brighten up my wardrobe. The thickness of the material makes it really easy to pop the color on the button-up that feels natural instead of forced. The Henley surprised me with its warm, soft lining; it’s technically not a lining, but it has a distinct feel compared to the outside of the shirt. Very soft and comfortable to wear. All the stitching and details on the clothing are really nice; they feel like they will last a long time and withstand wear and tear.”

2. Buck Mason
Best For | Classic pieces
Product Range | Tops, bottoms, denim, outerwear, accessories
Size Range | XS–XXL
Price Range | $45 (tee)–$148 (knit shirt)
Combine Ryan Gosling’s aesthetic with Los Angeles flair, and you’ve got Buck Mason. Founded in 2013 off Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Los Angeles, Buck Mason has re-designed everyday men’s style to be more modern, classic, and rugged. Loved by GQ, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal alike, this brand works for men everywhere. Whether you’re a fan of structured cotton or into 100 percent Pima, you’ll find each of the garments to be an exceptionally timeless addition to your wardrobe.
Cole’s review | “The cut and fit of these pieces have a sophisticated edge that you don’t find in a lot of brands. The Japanese Denim Maverick Slim Jean, 30×28 (custom inseam), ($228) fit my body type perfectly, and the site’s customization options allow you to tailor the pants before purchasing, eliminating the need for a hem; it’s a perfect fit. However, I did quibble with some of the details on the pants. The quality of the buttons doesn’t seem very high, and the silver color does not match the brass rivets. I also felt that their packaging could be more elevated and sustainably minded, considering the cost of the clothing. But I adore the fit of the pants, and the Cotton Rib Cardigan, S, ($298) fits my style perfectly — it’s the sweater I’ve always needed.”

3. Warren
Best For | Small-batch staples
Product Range | Shirts and pants
Size Range | S–2XL
Price Range | $75 (shirt)–$365 (shirt coat)
Warren was founded in tribute to the founder’s grandfather — also named Warren — whose wardrobe embodied simplicity, refinement, and durability. That timeless philosophy continues to shape the brand today. Rooted in the culture and craft of the New England coast, Warren designs and manufactures clothing locally, with an emphasis on thoughtful construction, responsible sourcing, and fabrics that feel as good as they last. Every garment is produced in small batches and made to be modern heirlooms. Men’s essentials are built with intention and eventually passed on, just like the clothes that inspired them.
Cole’s review | “This set is a true work of art and feels like something that was crafted from days gone by: Montcalm (Easy Trouser), S, ($295) and Barnard (Shirt Coat), S, ($365). The fit and concept are honestly like nothing I have ever seen before. The trousers have an incredible fit, where they are slim in all the right places and have some width in the hips and thighs, giving them a truly sharp and edgy silhouette. The Jacket is perfectly fitted and feels undeniably sharp. I had the chance to wear this set out on a date with my wife, and it was a perfect blend of comfort, edginess, and sophistication. The craftsmanship and material are truly something to marvel at.”

4. Patagonia
Best For | Outdoor apparel
Product Range | Outerwear, shirts, bottoms, accessories
Size Range | XXS–XXXL
Price Range | $39 (hat)–$999 (alpine suit)
Patagonia, renowned for championing the great outdoors, is the go-to destination for anyone who loves camping, hiking, or simply spending time in the sun. With fair labor practices, safe working conditions, and an eco-friendly mindset, every part of Patagonia’s supply chain embodies the brand’s philosophy of no harm. Each item even comes with a Footprint Chronicle so you can follow the exact process of how your clothing was made, from the textile mill to the sewing factory.
Cole’s Review | “I’ve never owned anything from Patagonia, but I’ve always appreciated their ethical and sustainable practices. After receiving the two shirts: Men’s Pile-Lined Fjord Loft Shirt Jacket, S, ($199), and Men’s Corduroy Shirt, S, ($129), I was able to appreciate what the brand has created fully. The shirts are beautifully crafted and feel like they will last a lifetime. I find myself reaching for them often in my closet, as they are not only very comfortable to wear but also beautifully designed. I can feel they were made with love. They feel like the people who made them are cared for and that there is a greater purpose surrounding the items.”

5. Jungmaven
Best For | Hemp basics
Product Range | Tops, pants, jackets, hats, socks
Size Range | S–XXL
Price Range | $22 (socks)–$480 (jacket)
Jungmaven began with the mission to create sustainable and simple clothing rooted in a lifestyle that deeply honors the earth. Their cornerstone is hemp-made clothing for its regenerative and long-lasting qualities. They’ve gone to great lengths to steward growing hemp in the United States, and today, their clothing is cut and sewn in California. At first glance, their clothing looks like simple closet staples, but it’s the touch and feel that sets them apart. The hemp creates a thicker-than-cotton feel but is still incredibly soft, making their clothing more durable.
Cole’s review | “I didn’t know shirts could feel this good. It was difficult to get a sense of the material from the website, and since I had never owned a shirt made from hemp, I didn’t know what to expect. When I first laid my hands on the two shirts: Woodstock Raglan Tee, S, ($120) and Baja Tee, S, ($62), it was like nothing I had ever felt before in a T-shirt. It has this beautiful weight and flow to the fabric. The packaging was simple and honest—each shirt wrapped in only paper. I love the cut and fit of the shirts, and upon wearing them, they actually feel warmer than a traditional cotton shirt, yet remain breathable at the same time. I didn’t totally understand the brand when first visiting the website, but now that I have experienced their product, I am a big fan.”

6. Filson
Best For | Durable clothing for rugged types
Product Range | Outerwear, shirts, pants, and accessories
Size Range | S–2XL
Price Range | $45 (t-shirt)–$599 (wool jacket)
Filson was founded in 1897 to outfit explorers for the Alaska Gold Rush. This history has been the foundation for their clothing — designed to equip those who thrive outdoors. Their durable pieces are US-made and prioritize responsible fabric sourcing, using humanely treated wool and down, as well as recycled natural fabrics. Alongside, Filson supports organizations like the National Forest Foundation and The Conservation Alliance to help preserve habitats and wildlife for generations to come.
Cole’s review |“These pieces feel timeless and ready to be put to work. When I ordered the Dry Tin Cloth 5-pocket Pants, 30×30 ($159), and the Clarkston Jac-shirt, S ($159), I thought they would be made of a thick, rugged material, similar to Carhartt overalls. I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived because the material was lighter and breathable, yet still felt sturdy enough to withstand tough work. The attention to detail is incredible. The buttons and zippers feel like they will last a lifetime and have a sense of history to them. The colors and dyes are rich and appear to be well-suited for long-term use and weathering. Opening the box welcomed you into a piece of history with thick and beautiful tags and quality packaging materials—everything feels timeless about the brand.”

7. Quince
Best For | Affordable men’s basics
Product Range | Tops, bottoms, activewear, swimwear, outerwear, accessories
Size Range | S–XL
Price Range | $20 (tee)–$500 (jacket)
For affordable and sustainable men’s clothing, we love shopping SF brand Quince. The company ships directly from their factories, cutting out the middleman and excessive packaging (you can read more about Quince’s supply chain here). They also use eco-friendly materials to make their garments — like recycled polyester for activewear and organic cotton twill for the chinos. Stylish, affordable, and sustainable.
Cole’s Review | “These pieces and other quince pieces I have owned have such a sharp and put-together look. The 100% Suede Bomber Jacket, S ($200) is an absolute staple for any man’s closet. It’s fitted, with a sharp look that goes with almost any outfit. I love how the sleeves hug your wrist, almost locking you in as you slip the jacket on fully. Paired with the Mongolian Cashmere Henley Sweater, S ($79.90), the combo makes a strong put-together appearance. The Henley looks and feels amazing on its own and can be worn with any pair of jeans or trousers. It’s rare to come across a Henley that is cashmere, and it’s a wonderful, rounded piece to have in your wardrobe. Can be layered for many seasonal looks.”

8. Pact
Best For | Organic cotton casuals
Product Range | Men’s basics, bottoms, outerwear
Size Range | S–XL
Price Range | $20 (tee)–$138 (jacket)
Pact is a sustainable apparel brand born out of Boulder, Colorado, specializing in quality basics, all of which are made ethically in Fair Trade Certified factories with 100 percent organic cotton. If you’re in the market for men’s undergarments, Pact is the place to shop. We’re confident the underwear and the outerwear collection will become some of the softest, most sustainable basics you own.
Cole’s Review | “The Cool Stretch Long Sleeve Crew Undershirt, S, ($28) is a slim fit with breathable cotton. At first touch, it almost feels a bit thin, but upon wearing it throughout the day, I appreciate how light and airy it feels. It’s perfect for wearing as an undershirt on a cold day, layered with a button-up. Tucked in and on its own, it creates a slim, sharp look, paired well with trousers and loafers. It’s a nice piece, but I do feel I will need to be delicate with it, being on the thin side and ultra white. The Stretch Twill 5-Pocket Pant, S, ($98) is a blend of dressed-up and a more casual around-the-house fit. The elastic waist gives them a more casual, comfortable feel, while also being high-wasted and looking great with a belt. The silhouette is sleek and fitted, and it dresses up any outfit quite nicely. It’s versatile in that it can be worn for many occasions.”

9. Everlane
Best For | Button-downs and chinos
Product Range | Tops, bottoms, outerwear, loungewear, underwear, accessories
Size Range | XS–XXL
Price Range | $30 (tee)–$198 (blazer)
For the man looking for quality staples like tees, jeans, chinos, and button-downs, Everlane is a one-stop shop to check off the list. Check out their footwear and swimwear made from recycled materials, and you can even upgrade your ratty old backpack to a proper, sustainably made weekender while you’re at it! You’re a man of style and substance, after all.
Cole’s Review | “The Performance Chino, 30×28, ($118) and The Heavyweight Overshirt, S, ($138) are the perfect fit. The Heavyweight Overshirt will be a staple in my wardrobe, elevating any look, whether I’m running errands, attending meetings, or spending a day out in the city. The chinos have a nice, slim silhouette and are slightly stretchy, making them breathable and comfortable to wear throughout the day. They also elevate any look from daytime jaunts to evenings out.”

10. Organic Basics
Best For | Underwear and socks
Product Range | Tops, pants, accessories
Size Range | XS–XXL
Price Range | $12 (socks)–$60 (hoodie)
Organic Basics makes “Better Made” basics that make us look good and feel good, without straining our wallets or the environment. The brand is also partnered up with One Carbon World to help offset their carbon emissions.
Cole’s Review | “I went out on a limb to go with the Casual Sport Long Sleeve Polo, S ($77). It’s not my typical look, but I absolutely love it. The slightly oversized cut has this amazing casual but dressed-up feel to it. It’s a beautiful quality and color. It can be worn out or tucked in for an even more refined look. I also opted for the True Heavy Regular Fit Tee, S ($39), which is a perfect fit, and the quality and cut feel really good. It’s a nice slim look and the subtle color is perfect.”

11. tentree
Best For | Comfy sweats
Product Range | Tops, bottoms, activewear, outerwear
Size Range | S–XXL
Price Range | $40 (tee)–$348 (parka)
Looking for men’s clothing that literally gives back? For every item purchased, tentree plants 10 trees. (Say that 10x fast.) The Canadian company prioritizes investing in regenerative agroforestry to help combat climate change and support positive impact for farmers and ecosystems. They also use a variety of sustainable fabrics and blends (e.g., organic cotton and Tencel) in their clothing production. Shop for comfortable clothing that leaves a minimal footprint.
Cole’s Review | “tentree has a high ethical standard, and they have some nice documentation on the tags that come with the clothes. However, when I first touched the Woodford Jacket, S ($148), I noticed it felt rough and not as soft as some of the other flannels I’d tried from different brands. I had never felt fabric like this before. After reading the tag, it made more sense. Much of the fabric is made from recycled cotton, and although that’s a great cause, the material feels stiff and not as soft as I would’ve liked. I also found the cut and fit of the shirt to be not quite right for my body. It’s also less of a jacket and more of a standard flannel, but with less softness — all that to say it’s not my favorite piece. Yet, the Dalton Sweater, S ($138), is a nice fit and a beautiful color. It sits well and has a nice, casual but elevated look to it. The material on this one is more of a sturdy cotton that you would expect in a sweater.”
