Summary: The Naturepedic EOS Organic Pillow Top is an insanely comfortable, customizable mattress that has multiple third-party certifications, making it one of the healthiest and safest mattresses on the market. It’s made without toxic materials, and its interchangeable layers allow me to adjust firmness on either side of the bed — ideal for changing sleep preferences, evolving bodies, and even picky partners.
What I Love:
- The cooling effect from the layers of nontoxic and organic latex, cotton, and wool keeps me comfortable throughout the night. When I’m cool, I sleep longer and more soundly, have better REM cycles, and improved recovery.
- Because it’s organic, I don’t have to worry about harmful chemicals affecting my hormones, immune system, or long-term health.
- Each side of the bed can be customized separately, allowing my future partner and me to have our ideal comfort levels. I can also easily swap out layers to change the firmness over time.
Things To Note:
- When I first opened the boxes, it was a little confusing to know how to stack the layers, but a quick call to a Naturepedic store solved it. I realized later that the brand also has tutorial videos embedded on their product pages, which is helpful, too!
- Choosing organic always comes with a higher price tag, and this mattress comes in currently at $3,040 for a Queen with their Black Friday sale, but I see it as a long-term investment in my health and longevity.
As a holistic psychotherapist, I often remind my clients that one of the most powerful ways to improve mental health is to go back to the basics: Prioritize sleep, move your body, eat real food, and minimize toxic exposure. Most of the time, these behaviors move the needle enough so that other interventions aren’t warranted.
Our sleep quality isn’t just about feeling rested; it directly affects what longevity experts now call our “healthspan,” or the number of years we spend in good health, free from chronic disease and mental decline.
“Our sleep quality isn’t just about feeling rested; it directly affects what longevity experts now call our ‘healthspan,’ or the number of years we spend in good health.”
Restorative sleep is one of the most powerful ways to extend our healthspan. It strengthens the immune system, rejuvenates the body, and balances the mind. In fact, REM sleep (the dreaming phase) has been shown to act as an emotional detox, helping us process difficult feelings and strip the emotional intensity from our daily experiences.
Dr. Matthew Walker, neuroscientist, sleep expert, and author of “Why We Sleep,” has spent over 20 years studying how sleep affects mental health. His research revealed something fascinating: He has never found a single psychiatric condition where sleep is normal. “This has taught me everything I need to know about the bidirectional relationship between your sleep health and your mental health,” he explains. It’s important that we not only pay attention to our mental health’s effect on sleep, but also our sleep and sleep environment’s effects on our mental health.

Because we spend so much time on a mattress, what it’s made of can impact not only our sleep, but also our overall health. I’ve long known that conventional mattresses contain chemicals like VOCs that can interfere with our body’s natural ability to repair and ward off chronic illness. For years, I put “find a truly non-toxic mattress” on my long list of healthy to-dos. But the more I researched, the more overwhelmed I felt.
So when I was asked to review Naturepedic’s EOS (Ergonomic Organic Sleep) Pillow Top Mattress, I was excited to take a deep dive into the mattress and experience firsthand how it might impact my sleep and well-being.
Why I chose the Naturepedic EOS
It wasn’t until my 40s that I started to take sleep seriously. In my 20s and 30s, I slept soundly on a memory foam mattress. But something changed in my 40s. My body, which never really complained in the decade prior, started talking back. At first, it was my back going out (ending my short love affair with hot yoga) and then the unwelcome hot flashes announcing menopause, leading to more restless nights than not.
“It wasn’t until my 40s that I started to take sleep seriously.”
In fact, last year I was diagnosed with a herniated disc after months of unsuccessfully troubleshooting intermittent back pain with stretching and Epsom salt baths. I had impulsively bought a new, highly rated mattress that was too soft because I thought my 15-year-old memory foam was to blame. It temporarily helped my back pain, but ended up overheating me. (If only I had known about Naturepedic’s EOS Pillow Top then, I could have ordered a different layer instead of buying a new mattress entirely!)
“Our bodies change over time, so why wouldn’t we want a mattress that evolves with us?”
One of the things I love about Naturepedic’s EOS Pillow Top mattress is that it is fully customizable — even years down the line. Our bodies change over time, so why wouldn’t we want a mattress that evolves with us? With the EOS mattress, I can order new layers when I need them to adjust the firmness or replace worn-out layers. They offer latex layers in soft, medium, or firm — and for coil layers, there is a choice between firmer coils or more plush coils.
Another reason I fell for this brand is their unparalleled dedication to crafting safe mattresses using organic materials with no compromise on craftsmanship:
- Each mattress is handmade in the USA (with responsibly sourced domestic and global materials) by skilled Amish craftspeople using wooden hand tools.
- They never use glues, adhesives, or polyurethane foam.
- They make their mattresses with organic cotton, wool, and latex, all sustainable materials that are naturally cooling and breathable.
- Each mattress takes twice as long to make as a conventional mattress. The brand doesn’t cut corners because they prioritize the health of the sleeper and the planet.
About Naturepedic
Naturepedic was founded in 2003 by Barry Cik, an environmental engineer and grandfather who couldn’t find a non-toxic, waterproof crib mattress for his first grandchild. Six months later, he built his first prototype in his garage. When he started the company, cancer was a leading cause of death in children aged 1–19. He believed the mattresses on the market containing toxic chemicals (polyurethane foam, flame retardants, and vinyl/PVC) contributed to cancer in toddlers. He started Naturepedic to create healthier sleep environments for his children and grandchildren by eliminating harmful chemicals.

Having lost my mother and ex-partner to cancer, I’m acutely aware of how toxins in our environment can impact our health. Since so many exposures are outside of our control, I’ve become intentional about minimizing the ones I can. Sleeping on a Naturepedic organic mattress gives me peace of mind, knowing I’m protecting my body and doing what I can when I rest to support my longevity.
Naturepedic has grown into a leading brand on a mission to improve health with certified organic mattresses for adults, children, and infants. They also offer pillows, bedding, wood furniture, robes, and pet beds. They now hold over 12 independent third-party certifications, including GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard), EWG Verified (the first brand to receive the Environmental Working Group’s certification for mattresses), and MADE SAFE, among others. They reinvest their profits into innovation and design, and hope to be a zero-waste company in the next year.
My review of the Naturepedic EOS Pillow Top mattress
The mattress arrived in seven boxes via UPS Ground. The individual layers and organic cotton encasement were shipped in separate boxes. This made it easier to bring them into the house, but I needed help getting the boxes up the stairs, into my bedroom, and assembled. Perhaps a strong person could do it solo, but I needed an extra set of hands for most of it!
Each layer was neatly vacuum-packed in recyclable kraft paper. While I was initially confused about the order of the layers, one quick phone call to the Naturepedic store in New York cleared everything up. A kind representative named Anthony patiently walked me through which layers went where and how to zip everything together. Within 45 minutes, my mattress was all set up and ready to go. Unlike other mattresses I’ve owned, there was zero chemical odor caused by off-gassing.

I tested the EOS Pillow Top with two firmness levels:
- One side Ultra Plush (plush coils, soft latex, soft latex)
- One side Plush (firmer coils, medium latex, soft latex)
As a side sleeper recovering from back pain, I wanted to experience and find the right balance between cushioning and support.
The first night on the Ultra Plush side felt like sleeping on a semi-firm marshmallow — soft and buoyant, yet supportive thanks to the coils. I was surprised when I slept through the night until 5:30 a.m., something I hadn’t done in a long time. After a few days, I flipped to the Plush side and immediately noticed the difference. My body felt more supported.

The organic latex, cotton, and wool materials have a subtle cooling effect, which helps me to stay asleep because they naturally regulate my temperature and wick moisture. Synthetic foams, on the other hand, tend to trap heat and can interfere with my body’s natural thermoregulation during sleep.
Three weeks in, I’m still sleeping on the Plush side. It cushions my hip and shoulders but also offers firmer support underneath. Going to bed has become the highlight of my day!
So, is the Naturepedic EOS worth the investment?
Mattresses are a bit like friends and romantic partners. We can outgrow them, and may at some point need to find one that is compatible with our current phase of life, that will evolve with us. Naturepedic’s EOS Pillow Top Mattress is worth its price because in it, I’ve found my mattress life partner. One that supports me now, and can grow and change with me too.

Naturepedic offers a 25-year warranty and unlimited layer swapping for the first 100 days. The EOS Pillow Top in Queen is currently priced starting at $3,040 (thanks to a 20% black Friday discount). This mattress is best for someone who wants to invest in a quality, sustainable, and organic mattress that will pay for itself over time through its health benefits and lifelong customizable comfort. For me, it’s worth it.
