Summary: When I first started testing the PlushBeds Royal Bliss Mattress, I wondered if I would truly feel the difference of a luxury price tag ($11,249 for a king). After almost six months of testing, I can say that it’s made a marked difference — I have fewer body aches and feel more rested overall. This luxury mattress features 1,283 hand-stitched calico coils, organic wool, and certified organic latex, which means it is breathable, durable, and has very low motion transfer. Because this mattress is heavy — 250 pounds for a king — I recommend the Royal Bliss most for settled households, rather than folks who relocate frequently, because it can be difficult to maneuver. It really is designed to last decades, and it comes with a lifetime warranty with financing options available!
What I Love:
- Hand-stitched calico coils and European craftsmanship: Each of the 1,283 coils in my king-size mattress is individually sewn into its pocket (not heat-sealed), which improves breathability, structure, and motion isolation.
- Gets me out of bed, not stuck in it: Unlike softer mattresses that made me want to linger and doom scroll, the Royal Bliss leaves me rested but not trapped — I actually feel ready to start my day.
- Superior edge support and perfect fit: The mattress sits flush to my bed frame with zero gaps, and the edge support is so good I sometimes don’t realize how close I am to falling off.
- Certified organic, no off-gassing: Made with British wool, organic cotton, and certified organic latex — all third-party tested with zero chemical smell out of the box.
- Lifetime warranty and built to last: Designed to last 10, 15, or even 20+ years, with a lifetime warranty against material or workmanship defects.
Things To Note:
- Weight and moving logistics: At 250 pounds for a king, this mattress requires professional movers and specialized delivery — not something you can easily move yourself or with friends.
- Significant investment: A king costs $11,249 (queen is $9,249), which puts it at the high end of organic luxury mattresses, though financing is available through Affirm.
- Rotation required: The mattress doesn’t need flipping, but rotation every few months is recommended, which requires help given the weight.
- Pet-friendly warning: If you have playful kittens, they may be very interested in the hand-tufted yarn markers on the surface.
- Best for settled households: If you move frequently, the weight and logistics may be challenging — this is a mattress for people planning to stay put for a while.
This past summer, I became the proud owner of a 250-pound mattress. A PlushBeds Royal Bliss Luxury Mattress in medium firmness, to be exact — a hand-tufted king-size bed that costs roughly 25 times what I spent on my trusty IKEA foam mattress that carried me through my twenties and into my thirties.
I’ve spent most of my life sleeping on budget mattresses and hand-me-downs, so when PlushBeds offered me the chance to test their luxury mattress — the kind designed to rival old-world European artisanship and theoretically get passed down through generations — I was deeply curious. What makes a $11,249 mattress different from a $400 one? Is it just marketing, or can you actually feel the difference?
“What makes a $11,249 mattress different from a $400 one? Is it just marketing, or can you actually feel the difference?”
Five months later, I can confirm: you feel it. From factory tours and delivery day logistics to genuinely restful sleep and discovering that my kitten is obsessed with hand-sewn tufts, here’s my honest review of the PlushBeds Royal Bliss.
My tour of the PlushBeds factory
Before the Royal Bliss ever arrived at my door, I had the opportunity to visit the PlushBeds factory in Camarillo, California. I’ve now toured factories for six different mattress brands, and PlushBeds stood out immediately. This is a hands-on operation; the factory is organized, methodical, and filled with piles of natural fabrics, specialized tools, and test stations.
“This is is a hands-on operation; the factory is organized, methodical, and filled with piles of natural fabrics, specialized tools, and test stations.”
Founder and CMO Michael Hughes walked me through the floor and told me the story behind the Royal Bliss — and it’s surprisingly similar to a tech startup origin story. PlushBeds wanted to recreate a specific European mattress-making technique that uses hand-stitched calico coils (where each steel coil is sewn into its pocket rather than heat-sealed or glued). The problem? The machines that do this work are no longer manufactured.
So PlushBeds found a retired European mattress maker who had operated these machines in the past, brought him out of retirement, and collaborated with a Japanese company to engineer a custom machine from scratch. They tested prototypes in a garage in the UK — a la Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak — then shipped the finished machine to California and brought the European craftsman to the U.S. to help set it up and train the team.
The result is a proprietary piece of equipment that sits on the factory floor, where mattress-makers craft each Royal Bliss by hand (and to order). Every stitch is intentional, and quality control happens at an individual level rather than on a conveyor belt. The quality is visibly top-notch. All of this is the kind of commitment to craft that feels more common in car-building or high-end furniture than in mattresses — but it makes sense when you consider that this product is designed to last decades, not years.
And it makes even more sense that the price tag on this luxury mattress is so high.

What makes this mattress so expensive?
I want to note again: This mattress is not cheap. At just over $10k, you could get a used car, pay down student loans, or finally get braces again after you decided to stop wearing your retainer as a teen. But, as I was touring the factory and learning more about the legacy of European mattress makers, it started to make a little more sense.
I have to share something the CMO of PlushBeds told me during my factory tour: The most expensive custom mattresses in the world cost around $500,000, and the two owners? The late Queen of England and the rapper Drake.
So the real flex isn’t driving a $500,000 sports car; it’s sleeping in a $500,000 bed. This is beyond silent luxury — maybe unspoken luxury. No labels, no one’s ever going to see it (unless you want them to 😜), and you’re not going to get compliments from strangers. But you’re investing in something that quietly serves you every single night. It’s the opposite of showboating, and I think there’s something really compelling about that approach to quality.
“You’re investing in something that quietly serves you every single night.”
So what specifically makes the PlushBeds Royal Bliss so costly? Let’s dive in.
The calico coil system is the foundation; each steel coil is hand-sewn into its fabric pocket (rather than heat-sealed), which improves breathability, structure, and resilience. The design minimizes motion transfer and allows weight to distribute naturally without that “trampoline bounce” you get with cheaper innerspring mattresses. This is especially valuable if you share a bed or are a light sleeper.
Above the 1,283 coils in the king size, you’ll also find layers of British wool (for moisture-wicking and temperature regulation), organic cotton (for airflow), and certified organic latex (for cushioning and support). The cover is organic damask fabric, and the whole thing is hand-tufted to keep the layers in place without adhesives. Skipping the adhesives also reduces VOCs and helps reduce off-gassing that you usually find in more mass-market mattresses.
There are no petrochemicals, and PlushBeds only uses natural or sustainable materials (including recycled steel for the coils). The certifications that the Royal Bliss mattress and its materials carry are also impressive:
- GOLS Certified organic latex
- GOTS Certified organic cotton
- GOTS Certified organic wool
- GreenGuard Gold certification
- eco-INSTITUT certification
- Control Union certification
Once assembled, the king-size mattress weighs in at 250 pounds. Founder and CMO Hughes explained to me that weight is often a reliable indicator of quality, since it means the mattress is densely packed and intentionally filled, with fewer spaces that can sag, droop, or warp over time. Most bed-in-a-box brands will max out their mattresses at 150 pounds to save on shipping (once you pass about 150 pounds, you need to choose a more specialized — and expensive — shipping service). Not here!
Delivery day and setup
My order went into production on May 20 and arrived by June 16 — faster than most furniture I’ve ordered (aside from IKEA, hah!). For this mattress, PlushBeds estimates delivery within a couple of weeks from the time of your order.
Since the king-size Royal Bliss weighs 250 pounds, it came flat-packed (but not smooshed or compressed) via specialized delivery service. The delivery professionals definitely struggled getting this mattress up to my second-floor apartment; I think they would have appreciated having a third set of hands to help. I tipped them generously and gave them cold seltzer waters, profusely apologizing for the amount of effort involved.
“Since the king-size Royal Bliss weighs 250 pounds, it came flat-packed (but not smooshed or compressed) via specialized delivery service.”
I’d also forgotten to arrange removal of my old mattress (an Avocado Eco Organic, which I’ve been sleeping on and loving for years). So right before they arrived, I heaved my old mattress — by myself — off my bed frame and folded it into a corner. My cat thought it was the end times and hid under the bed, which is exactly where the delivery guys needed to go. Let’s just say it wasn’t Nova’s favorite day. 🐈⬛
The hallway angles in my apartment are tight, so the delivery team had to pivot the mattress multiple times to get it into my bedroom. And this mattress does not bend; it’s not as floppy or flexible as my Avocado mattress, which was much easier to move. Regretfully, the days of me rearranging my room on my own are long gone now that I have this mattress.

While the heavy weight does indicate its fine construction and quality, the reality check is that logistics are a real factor with a mattress of this scale. I recently toured a two-bedroom bungalow for rent, and while the cost and location weren’t the right fit, I couldn’t stop thinking about how I’d get a 250-pound mattress down my current stairs, into a truck, and then up another flight and a half.
“While the heavy weight does indicate its fine construction and quality, the reality check is that logistics are a real factor with a mattress of this scale.”
If you’re someone who moves frequently, this is worth considering. You’ll likely need professional movers (or some very strong friends) to maneuver this behemoth on stairs or narrow hallways.
Once it was finally on my bed frame, I was genuinely surprised by how well it fit. This mattress sits flush to the corners of my Avocado bed frame — no gaps at all. My Avocado Eco Organic mattress was *slightly* smaller and left a little space at the edges of the frame. The Royal Bliss fits like a glove, or like…a pencil eraser. The mattress is 14 inches tall (my Avocado was closer to 10 inches), so it’s noticeably taller and way more substantial. My standard king-size sheets fit fine, though I did have to shimmy them on since the mattress sits so flush against the bed frame. A minor thing, but worth noting if you’re particular about ease of bed-making.

And of course, there was zero off-gassing or chemical smell, which I’ve come to expect as a standard from these high-end organic brands. It just smelled like new fabric and natural materials — nothing harsh or synthetic.
So, what’s the PlushBeds Royal Bliss mattress like to actually sleep on?
From the first night, this mattress was immediately comfortable. No break-in period, no stiffness, no weird adjustment phase. Just solid, supportive sleep.
As a side sleeper, I often struggle to find the right balance between support for my shoulders and hips and enough give to prevent pressure build-up. The Royal Bliss handles both well. The dense array of hand-stitched coils supports my weight evenly, while the layers of wool, cashmere, and latex above provide genuine comfort without feeling rigid or overly plush.
“No break-in period, no stiffness, no weird adjustment phase. Just solid, supportive sleep.”
The support comes in part from the hand-tufted sections that remind me of cartoon clouds in Mario games — big, pillowy arches spaced about eighteen inches apart. They’re functional (they cradle pressure points without feeling lumpy) and add a nice visual detail. (My kitten immediately tried to attack the little yarn markers on each tuft, so pet owners should be aware.)
As for breathability, I’ve placed my mattress in a west-facing room that gets afternoon sun, and it never gets unpleasantly warm. The natural materials — wool, cotton, latex — allow for real airflow, and I haven’t experienced any heat build-up even on warmer days.

Changing positions at night is easy, with little interference from the mattress surface. This is not a bed you “sink” into and get stuck in — movement is smooth, and the structure means it has very low motion transfer; no more jostling your partner awake every time you toss and turn. That doesn’t mean it’s not pleasantly bouncy, though, for more recreational activities! The edge support is also noticeably superior to most competitors. Sitting or lying near the boundary feels stable, and the mattress retains its shape perfectly. I can shimmy right up to the edge without realizing how close I am — which has resulted in my kitten getting a little too comfortable and occasionally falling off the side like Mufasa in The Lion King. (He’s fine. Just dramatic.)
“This is not a bed you “sink” into and get stuck in — movement is smooth, and the structure means it has very low motion transfer; no more jostling your partner awake every time you toss and turn.”
Here’s the thing I didn’t expect, and honestly, it’s the biggest differentiator for me: this mattress doesn’t make me want to stay in bed.
You might protest — “but Emily, comfy mattresses should always make you want to stay in bed!” Let me explain. My Avocado Eco Organic mattress — which I loved and still recommend for its price point — was cozy in a way that made me want to linger. I’d wake up and think, “Actually, I think I’m a bed person. I’m going to stay in my cozy spot and doom scroll for a while.” It is comfortable and enjoyable to spend time in.

The Royal Bliss is different. Instead of waking and succumbing to the coziness, I wake up feeling rested and like my body is ready to face the day. Even on nights I get only a few hours of sleep (ugh), my body doesn’t feel like it’s made of lead when I wake, as it has in the past, especially when I was sleeping on the old IKEA mattress. I easily roll out of bed and start my day.
It’s cozy and inviting, but it’s not enveloping me or convincing me to stay just five more minutes. And that’s been a pretty significant quality-of-life shift.
Financing, warranty, and mattress care
With a price tag like this one, it’s ultra-important to know as much as possible up front before you invest. So let’s talk numbers!
A king-size PlushBeds Royal Bliss is $11,249. A queen is $9,249. These figures put the Royal Bliss at the upper end of organic luxury mattresses, and I’m not going to pretend that’s an accessible price point for most people. But, PlushBeds offers financing through Affirm, and at 0% APR, a king comes out to about $338 a month. For reference, the average new car payment in America hit $750 a month in 2025. It’s still not cheap, but when you factor in the projected multi-decade lifespan and the quality of materials and assembly, the cost per year starts to look different.
I think it’s worth asking yourself: If you’re at a point in life where you’re considering upgrades — a new car, a nicer couch, a kitchen remodel — is a mattress worth prioritizing? You’re not going to get outward status points; no one’s going to compliment your mattress. But you will spend a third of your life on it, and the functional return — better sleep, better mornings, less body pain — is real.
“You will spend a third of your life on it, and the functional return — better sleep, better mornings, less body pain — is real.”
When it comes to making sure you like your purchase, the Royal Bliss comes with a 100-night sleep trial, which is essential for a product at this price point. The warranty covers lifetime protection against material or workmanship defects for as long as you own the mattress. This is more robust than most market competitors, though it’s always worth reading the fine print, especially if you move often or may want to resell later.
That brings us to care — how can you reasonably make sure your mattress is in tip-top shape for its entire life? From day one, I covered it using PlushBeds’ organic cotton mattress protector that shipped separately but was included in the mattress purchase. I find this mattress protector soft, not too plasticky or crinkly, and it’s held up well to routine washing. I’ll be honest: I drink too much coffee in bed and have pets, so I added a second mattress protector on top to be safe (this one from Sijo). Yes, it’s redundant, but I want to protect this investment. If you double up on protectors like I did, you may reduce breathability slightly, but I haven’t found it to be a major issue.
“This mattress does not need to be flipped, which is a relief. Rotation every few months is suggested, but otherwise, maintenance is minimal.”
This mattress does not need to be flipped, which is a relief. Rotation every few months is suggested, but otherwise, maintenance is minimal. There are built-in handles on both long sides to make rotating manageable, though at 250 pounds, I’ll definitely need help when the time comes. If you relocate frequently, it’s also fair to consider this weight — it will be a hassle to move. But for anyone who is reasonably settled and planning to stay put for a while, I do think the tradeoff is superior longevity and comfort.
And finally, as for customer service, I haven’t needed to use their support channels much beyond initial logistics. Communication was prompt, delivery happened as promised, and the overall experience was professional.
So, who is the Royal Bliss mattress best for?
The PlushBeds Royal Bliss is a genuine investment — one that makes sense if you care about certified-organic materials, exceptional build quality, and a mattress that’s designed to last 10, 15, or even 20+ years. It’s substantial, well-made, and delivers on its promises of support, breathability, and durability. I personally saw my average sleep time jump 45 minutes higher in the weeks after I received the Royal Bliss, which means two things: I was less busy, and I was more excited to get to bed.
“The PlushBeds Royal Bliss is a genuine investment — one that makes sense if you care about certified-organic materials, exceptional build quality, and a mattress that’s designed to last.”
For readers comparing this directly to other mattresses I’ve tested, I still recommend the Avocado Eco Organic for those wanting a lighter, more modestly priced option. If you expect to move frequently or want to maximize value on a medium budget, Avocado is a great starting point. If you’re athletic and want a performance-focused bed at a lower price point, you might consider the Bear Elite Hybrid. (I slept on the Bear Pro for three months, and the Avocado Eco Organic for three years!) But the Royal Bliss is in a different class entirely — a luxury, intentional investment for people who want their home to quietly serve them for years.
No mattress will change your life overnight, but the Royal Bliss has made my sleep more restorative and my mornings easier. And for me, that quiet shift in my nightly sleep quality has rippled out to my waking life in ways that it matters most.
