We’ve researched and slept on dozens of natural bed frames over the years. These are our top picks for storage bed frames that use certified nontoxic, sustainable materials.

Extra storage space is never a bad thing — and for those of us who live in small homes, we know how important it is to every square inch of storage space. Bed frames with storage built in are a great way to utilize all of your space. These storage beds are made with nontoxic and eco-friendly materials — so they’re beautiful, safe, and functional, too.

What are the benefits of a storage bed frame?

Sometimes you just need a little extra space, and storage beds offer exactly that in an efficient and compact way. If you need somewhere to store extra linens, off-season clothes — or maybe even your extra books, yarn, or craft supplies — storage bed frames are a great way to keep things out of sight and out of mind, yet still easily accessible.

What to look for when buying a storage bed frame?

There are a few different types of storage bed frames to consider. Some storage bed frames have drawers that are part of the bed and roll out from under it, allowing you to use them almost like a dresser drawer. Others have storage drawers that aren’t attached to the bed but nestle perfectly underneath. These are great for if you often pull your drawers all the way out or need to move them around. Some storage beds have a hydraulic hinge open that allows you to easily open the entire top of the bed, offering up ample storage underneath the mattress and the slats. These are ideal for extra blankets, bedsheets, or clothes that you don’t need to access quite as frequently.

Why are nontoxic bedframes with natural materials important?

Beyond the basics of storage bed frames, though, it’s always important to consider the materials you want your bed frame to be made of. The beds on this list are made from sustainable, eco-friendly, and nontoxic materials that also look beautiful in our homes. Look for materials like real wood, natural upholstery, like linen, or recycled materials. Avoid materials like polyurethane and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) because these off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals, releasing them into your indoor environment. We’ve chosen brands with certifications like Greenguard, FSC, and Fair Trade to ensure you’re getting a safe product for your sleeping environment.

Our criteria:

  • SUSTAINABLE & ECO-FRIENDLY | The brands on this list use sustainable practices and eco-friendly materials in their storage bed frames. Many also give back to the environment through planting trees.
  • NONTOXIC | These storage beds are made with natural and organic materials — from frame to fabric. They are free from VOCs, formaldehyde, and other harmful chemicals.
  • AFFORDABLE | Purchasing a bed frame is an investment. But we understand you might not want to break the bank. A few of the options on this list are affordable for smaller budgets, without sacrificing quality.
  • DESIGN & STORAGE | These storage bed frames offer both fashion and function for your bedroom, created with high-quality design and solutions for your storage.

Best For | Wood and upholstered storage bed options
Sustainable Materials | FSC certified wood
Available Sizes | Full, Queen, King

West Elm has several storage bed frames, but a few stand out in terms of sustainability and care. The Miles Wood & Upholstered Side Storage Bed is Fair Trade Certified, Greenguard Gold Certified, and uses FSC-certified wood. Its design includes both wood and upholstery, with two sizable drawers on each side for storage. The upholstery is primarily polyester, though, so keep that in mind if you’re trying to avoid synthetic fabrics (though it is certified to have low emissions of VOCs and other harmful chemicals). The other bed from West Elm that we love is the Mid-Century Storage Bed, made with FSC-certified kiln-dried wood and covered in a water-based finish. It’s a best seller and contract grade, too.
