Affordable Window Treatments For a Custom Designer Look

One of my most requested design topics is window treatments… it seems everyone appreciates pointers, feedback, or ideas on creating a classic window vignette that is both functional and beautiful. Sometimes, that’s easier said than done- especially if you don’t have the budget for custom window treatments. Fear not! Today, I wanted to share some of my top picks and pointers with you. Click through for my favorite affordable window treatments from Wayfair, for a custom designer look. As an interior designer who specialized in window treatments (with a full workroom) for many years, take it from me- fully custom window treatments are nice… but not a necessity.

In the past, I’ve shared how to “train” readymade curtains, and that’s an integral part of the process if you’re eyeing readymade drapery panels for a custom look. Be sure to visit that post after you choose your preferred panels. The key to making budget window treatments look custom is to keep it simple, sophisticated, and tailor them as needed. Layering is also a great idea when it comes to a designer look! Scroll on for my top affordable options that include woven wood shades, fabric roman shades, cafe curtains, pleated drapery panels, and even drapery rods & rings. I’m covering all sorts of window treatment ideas! I hope it’s helpful…

Woven Wood Shades

Instead of installing faux wood blinds, I much prefer a woven wood shade! These add warmth and texture to any window, and they’re ideal for layering beneath drapery panels for a customized look. I typically opt for an inside mount to an outside mount, as they’re a good choice for a designer aesthetic. Outside mounted shades often feel like an afterthought, and don’t appear as tailored.

Fabric Roman Shades

Similarly, fabric roman shades are another beautiful way to dress your windows- especially if you’re looking for more privacy or light filtration. These can also be layered with drapery panels- or are equally as lovely on their own for a minimalistic aesthetic. I much prefer installing fabric roman shades as opposed to roller shades. They feel much higher end. While there are lots of different shade options on the market, roman shades are my personal favorite.

Cafe Curtains

I haven’t had the opportunity to use cafe curtains in my own home, however- these are ideal for laundry rooms, powder rooms, bathrooms, and unique spaces. We did install quite a few cafe curtains in the camper reveal! You can even use these in combination with lower cabinetry to create a custom, skirted look (like in front of a sink cabinet). These shorter curtain panels are the perfect solution for adding privacy or texture to odd spaces or smaller windows.

Pleated Drapery Panels

Distinctive pinch pleat panels are probably what comes to mind when you think of custom window treatments. While these do achieve a designer look, they often come with a hefty price tag. I was able to find many wonderful pleated options from Wayfair that will help to elongate or accent your ceiling height. These are also ideal if you’re in need of blackout curtains, as many of these have a heavy liner. These affordable window coverings should be installed high (just beneath the crown or ceiling) and wide (stacked to the sides) to perfectly frame your window.

Drapery Rods

I did want to include sections on drapery hardware, as I’m often asked about sourcing curtain rods. Wayfair is another great source for those… and these can be ordered in a variety of sizes. You can also order them oversized and cut them to length (pro tip). When I’m selecting drapery rods, I try to stick to a simple design… French rods with a minimal return or streamlined finials never go out of style. These all offer a high-quality option, including finishes that will withstand the test of time: bronze, black, antique (or living) brass, and polished nickel. Those are my designer go-to finishes.

Drapery Rings

Like curtains rods, drapery rings are available in various styles and finishes. You should always match your curtain rings to your drapery rod for a cohesive and custom look!

Window Treatment FAQ

When shopping for ready-made curtains, what materials do you look for?

My personal preference is natural materials, like linen, wool, or cotton… or I’ll find a performance blend. I also like textural options, such as velvet or silk.

Should all of the window treatments in a room match?

When sourcing new window treatments, I do prefer my windows to feel cohesive. If all of the windows in the space are the same, I’d definitely recommend they perfectly match. However, if some windows lend themselves to a different type of treatment- I would strive to make them look cohesive. The overall look of your windows should feel like they belong in the same room… even if they aren’t exact.

Any ideas on how to customize readymade window treatments?

Absolutely! There are so many ways to achieve a unique designer look… you can add trim or appliqué to the leading edge, hem them to perfectly fit your window vignette, or even dye existing panels. Check out this post on how to dye fabric, like I did to the curtain panels in my basement media room.
