Best Affordable Bedding for a Designer-Looking Bed

Earlier this year, I decided to try bedding from Quince. I’ve made plenty of clothing purchases from them the past few years, but had never dipped into their home section. To keep it brief… I’ve been so impressed, I’ve since been back for two more sheet sets, a duvet, and blankets. While not the popular designer opinion, there’s no reason a beautiful bed has to come with a luxury price tag… even when using 100% natural and organic materials- like linen or cotton. Over the years, I’ve learned how to style a high-end looking bed using quality and classic basics. Whether you’re refreshing your primary bedroom, are hosting guests in the months ahead, or are sourcing timeless bedding from scratch… today, I’m sharing my favorite affordable bedding essentials that look and feel high-end. These layers are as comfortable as they are beautiful. Click through for my non-negotiable bedding basics- that won’t break the bank.

A few years ago, I shared my go-to formula for styling a bed, and nothing has really changed. I still appreciate a fuss-free, yet tailored and layered look. The best way to get that effortless and pulled together aesthetic is by choosing the right materials and textures! If you’re looking for a cheat sheet of sorts, these are the items I source for pretty much every bed I style… recently from Quince, so this post turned into a bit of a bedding review.

How to Choose Affordable Bedding That Doesn’t Look Cheap

OEKO TEX certified organic bedding from Quince

There’s a misconception that affordable bedding lacks quality, but that’s not always true. You just need to know what to look for. These elements help affordable bedding feel elevated, and are typically much more comfortable. I like to stick with brands that prioritize:

  • Natural materials like cotton, linen, bamboo, or down inserts.
  • OEKO-TEX® certification for safe, non-toxic textiles.
  • Minimalist styling in solid colors or timeless patterns (like stripes).
  • Easy care- no dry cleaning required.

Designer approved linen, cotton, and bamboo bedding from Quince

Here are my tried-and-true basics I’ve been using to create a designer-styled bed… without the steep price tag. My current formula looks like this:

1. European Linen Sheet Set

I love a super soft, breathable, hotel-like feel, and linen delivers every time. It’s one of those materials that is ideal year round. This sheet set from Quince is woven from 100% organic European flax, and ours has held up beautifully over time. We sleep on these sheets every night, and as of now- I don’t plan to swap them this fall or winter. Unlike my usual move to flannel, these are it for me. Emmett and I both agree we’re sleeping our best in these sheets.

This set includes:

  • 1 fitted sheet
  • 1 flat sheet
  • 2 pillowcases (in whichever size you order)

2. Premium Down (or Down Alternative) Duvet Insert

We have both down and down alternative duvet inserts in our home. While down is a premium choice and holds up the longest, you don’t need to splurge to get that plush, cloud-like look. Their down-alternative insert also does the job, is great for those prone to allergies, and it’s easier to maintain. I prefer inserts with baffle box construction for that lofty, full shape. Another thing to look for in a good duvet insert- corner loops to prevent slipping inside the cover!

3. Cotton, Linen, or Bamboo Duvet Cover

A linen duvet cover brings a relaxed look, which I really appreciate during the summer months. Cotton and bamboo feel appropriate year round… they’re crisp, clean, and silky. We currently have this cotton duvet on our primary bed, and this bamboo duvet on the guest bed. I typically swap these depending on the season, which makes it fun to play with lighter and darker color options.

4. Down (or Down Alternative) Pillow Inserts

I’m just going to say it… I’m not a fan of Euro inserts. I’ve tried them and they just don’t seem as practical or offer the aesthetic I’m after. I always choose rectangular pillows, so I dress our beds with four bed pillows… 4 queen-size pillows on a queen bed (pairs neatly stacked) or 4 king-size pillows on a king bed (again, neatly stacked). That’s my formula for a layered, hotel look that is pretty and practical.

5. Lightweight Cotton Blanket or Quilt

For a designer-looking bed, layering is key. A textural blanket adds visual interest without bulk. I like to fold a waffle weave or textured blanket at the foot of the bed for added dimension and warmth. Typically, I’ll choose a contrasting color, as it’s a great way to insert color or pattern.

Designer Tips for Layering an Affordable Bed

To summarize, here are my quick tips for a well-styled bed… it’s all about balance and texture. Here’s how I do it:

  1. Start with fitted and flat sheet… and a bed skirt, if your bed rails are not upholstered.
  2. Top the bed with a duvet, folded down 1/3 of the way.
  3. Stack a pair of pillows on each side of the bed (queen-size pillows for a queen bed, or king for a king-size bed). This equals four bed pillows, total.
  4. Complete the pillow vignette with a long lumbar or bolster pillow for a tailored and finished look.
  5. Add a lightweight blanket or quilt to the foot of the bed in a contrasting texture, color, or pattern. This can be folded for a more tailored look- or draped, for a relaxed look.

FAQ

How many pillows should be on a queen bed?

This is totally personal preference, but my magic number is five… four bed pillows (two pairs neatly stacked), and a decorative lumbar or bolster to finish the look.

Are Quince sheets good quality?

I think so- especially for the price and material! Check out my Quince linen bedding review here! I go into greater detail on quality.

Can I mix bedding textures?

Absolutely… in fact, I’d encourage that! Mixing materials like linen, cotton, bamboo, and waffle weave adds dimension and makes your bed feel thoughtfully styled.

Do you have advice when it comes to color?

A neutral color palette always allows you to mix materials while keeping the look cohesive. Solids and classic stripes are my go-to. In a guest room, I’m partial to white sheets so guests can visibly see that they’re clean… like a hotel.
