33 Decorating With Green Ideas to Elevate Your Home
By Interior Designer TRACY SVENDEN | Published on July 28, 2025 |
Decorating with green remains a dominant trend in interior design for 2025, with various shades gaining popularity. Feeling like a natural progression from the outdoors, green brings life to a home, infusing spaces with a calming, relaxing, and fresh aesthetic. It’s also a color that is forecasted to remain relevant in the upcoming year, as Behr has just announced that Hidden Gem, a smoky jade, is its official 2026 Color of the Year. The selection reinforces this movement towards moodier yet still nature-inspired hues within the design industry.
Green works well in a wide variety of design styles, from rustic to farmhouse, traditional, and modern. The key to successfully incorporating green lies in selecting the right shade for the mood and style you want to achieve.
Pistachio and mint green are leading colors for spring and summer, known for their optimistic and soothing qualities. Earthy greens, such as olive and sage, are also highly popular, fostering a sense of calm and a connection to nature.
For those seeking sophistication and depth, dark verdant greens are a favored choice. Darker, rich greens such as emerald, hunter, and juniper are luxurious and moody hues that pair well with luxurious materials like velvet or marble. Feature image courtesy of KBD Interiors.
Incorporating Green Into Your Home
Once you’ve chosen your preferred shade, there are numerous ways to infuse green into different areas of your home, from a fresh coat of paint to creating an accent wall as a striking focal point. Green kitchen cabinets, ranging from muted sage to dark, verdant hues, offer a unique look that’s both trend-forward and classic.
Try introducing green through larger furniture pieces, like a green velvet sofa, to make a statement, or in small accent pieces, such as side tables, dining chairs, or console tables. For a less permanent commitment or to layer the color, use textiles and accessories such as area rugs, cushions, throw pillows, and window treatments.
Incorporate art with green hues to tie the color into your overall scheme. Small green accents, such as vases and sculptural pieces, can be strategically placed throughout the home to create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.
Take a look at how top interior designers incorporate green into their spaces with the following decorating tips:

1. Green Accent Wall
In a serene and sophisticated primary suite created by interior designer Karin Bennet, dark olive green walls add a moody aesthetic. This elegant and relaxing bedroom features cozy oatmeal upholstery with vertical channeling, oversized nightstands for ample book storage, and an abundance of layered textures, soothing hues, and warm wood tones. A dramatic white ceiling and neutral bedding provide a dramatic contrast.

2. Built-In Cabinetry
In another stunning home by Karin Bennet, the interior spaces are infused with timeless design elements, a refined aesthetic, and curated details. A custom-built cabinet, in a rich olive green hue and striking arches, takes center stage. I love how Karin incorporated beautifully veined marble as a luxurious backdrop to shelving lined with a collection of decorative objects, artwork, vases, and books.

3. Incorporating Sage Green
Sage green is having a moment in 2025, appearing in everything from walls to furniture, decor, and artwork. Viewed as a soft neutral color by many interior designers, sage green connects to wood elements and represents balance, harmony, and rejuvenation.
Sage also blends harmoniously with both warm and cool tones, effortlessly enhancing any space. This calming bathroom was designed by Kat Lawton, who is known for her enduring style and heritage quality influenced by classic European design. The space is color-drenched in Benjamin Moore’s Nantucket Gray and accented with antique brass elements.

A rich emerald green painting pairs perfectly with deep olive window treatments, a pale green area rug, and a bright white and spring green floral arrangement. This small space makes a bold statement with a blend of rich textures, natural materials, and warm wood tones.

6. Velvet Green Accent Chairs
Interior designer Ariel Okin created this polished yet playful, bright, and refreshing sun-soaked space, where a love of color is evident. Her clients had diverse design aesthetics, and Okin sought to combine the husband’s desire for a tailored Ralph Lauren clubhouse feel with the fashion designer wife’s style, which favors playful patterns, layered textures, and rich colors.
The result is a living room with a peaceful, neutral palette that pops with rich greens, marigolds, and rusts, crowned by a lacquered blue ceiling (Farrow & Ball’s Borrowed Light) that resembles a clear sky. Further design features include vintage cabinets, olive green accent chairs, and Serena & Lily Club chairs.

7. Combining Green & Caramel Hues
Heath Interior Design completed the renovation and decoration of a 1920’s Spanish Revival home in Los Feliz, CA. In each room, the home’s original architectural features were the initial inspiration for their design approach. Soft, textural furnishings brought new life to a cozy primary bedroom, pairing caramel hues with warm green tones. Layered bedding, vintage accents, floor-to-ceiling window treatments, wood beams, and greenery complete the look.

Stunning design details complete the space like inset drapes, a rolling wood ladder, leather club chairs, and a vintage area rug. The wine room storage, from top to bottom, is made of oak in a custom stain, housing the client’s extensive bottle collection.

Known for her beautifully layered, magazine-worthy designs, Hopter curates with subtle layers of slightly different shades of the same hue to create visual interest. The combination of dramatic light and dark elements adds the perfect finishing touch.

The entry opens up to the kitchen and dining area, where they placed a dark green mohair fabric on a banquette with a custom white oak dining table. In the living room, they continued to incorporate green accents into the bookshelves.

27. Pair with Shades of Red
Red and green hues are frequently paired because they are complementary colors, sitting opposite each other on the color wheel. This creates a high contrast that is visually striking and aesthetically pleasing, although it can also be overwhelming if not used carefully. In the living room below, dark shades of red and green are balanced by cream walls and white furniture.

28. Pair With Neutrals
White, cream, beige, taupe, and gray are natural partners for all shades of green, allowing the green to stand out while maintaining a balanced palette. In a bathroom designed by Joanna Gaines, a deep olive green feature wall adds depth and dimension to a neutral space, complementing the white tiled flooring and walls.
