We’re moving right along with the home gym renovation. Today, I’ve got some big updates for you… and a look behind-the-scenes. We’ve tackled drywall, flooring, are in the midst of planning, and I even started painting- although that step didn’t quite go as expected. Click through for the full remodeling update!
If you missed this, our current renovation project is our home gym. We thought it would be a quick and easy space to remodel, and we’re hoping it gives us a little motivation to get in better shape this year. No excuses after this! If you missed my latest update, check it out here… Home Gym Renovation: Before Images & Demo. Scroll through that tour to see where we started and my overall vision or design plan for this room. Here’s how it’s looking today…
Drywall Patching and Electrical

Emmett spent a ton of time patching drywall. We needed to update our recessed lighting, run electrical to the built-in closet (for a sconce & in-cabinet power), and rework the switch plates & outlets. That has taken the most time.
Installing Flooring

Next, he jumped right into flooring. We’re installing the same Stuga material we have throughout the rest of our basement. Check out this post for a closer look… how to install hardware flooring in a basement. It’s a specific wood flooring approved for basements. Once it was installed, we covered it to keep it protected for the duration of the renovation.
Planning and Our Built-In Cabinets
While he was busy with that, I was wrapped up in design & ordering. I ordered a new door for the room. It will match the others throughout our house- as well as my beloved brass door hardware. You can check out the door style here: how to order & replace an interior door.
Our nero marble tile arrived (pictured above) and I took some time to update a few gym accessories I’ve had my eye on. They sort of shaped the color palette for this room.

Most exciting was finalizing our walnut built-in and seeing the beginning stages come to life. Here’s a peek at my rendering and a look at the process. They’re being professionally made at Emmett’s work… perks of being employed at a cabinet shop!
I’m in the process of looking at stain colors, that way we’ll be set once they’re ready for finishing. It should look something like this, once it’s installed…

Paint & Wallpaper

The wallpaper also arrived and it’s fabulous, if I do say so myself! It’s exactly what I had in mind and the scale is really fun. I took it to my local Sherwin-Williams to have it color matched for our ceiling and wall paint (the window wall isn’t getting wallpaper since it will have curtains), but the I don’t think it’s a good color match. It’s back to the drawing board on the paint. I’d like to get it as close as possible, and I’m convinced it needs to be a touch darker. Emmett thinks I’m being a little insane, but those details will bother me (I know myself)– so I’m fixing it.

FAQ
Of course, and thank you! You can find it here: how to measure, select, and install interior door hardware (a step-by-step guide).
I’ll drop an image below! It’s patched, electrical has been ran, flooring is installed, and we’re just awaiting the custom cabinets. We’ll install those, tile the backsplash, install a sconce, and trim it out for a custom look.
