Great Room & Living Space

Mountain Chalet in Sun Valley Idaho

I’ll begin by saying, the architecture of this mountain chalet is nothing short of stunning. With vaulted ceilings, and stone fireplaces throughout- there is plenty to admire. Let’s start in the great room, which anchors the main living space in the heart of the home.

One thing I absolutely noted throughout this home tour is the lighting. With iron and bronze fixtures that drop in to illuminate the space, they double as sculptural art.

I adore Jennifer’s styling throughout this home. It’s cozy, layered, and textural, but still highly functional. You’ll notice lots of custom upholstery, woven rugs, and thoughtfully floor planned areas for cozy conversation.

Moving into the breakfast area, I could totally envision having coffee and a croissant with this stunning view. What a picturesque vignette!

Den

A smooth river rock fireplace is the focal point in the inviting den, located just off the kitchen and breakfast area. Again, you’ll find comfortable seating to snuggle around the fire.

The built-in is styled with ceramics and local pottery, and there is plenty of beautiful artwork throughout this home to discover. I also love the addition of red textiles, which adds the perfect splash of color throughout this impressive cabin.

Dining Room

The dining room has a grand, yet comfortable feel to it. Upholstered dining chairs and an elongated bench provide plenty of seating around the long oval table. If I had to guess, photos probably don’t do the scale of this space justice. I imagine it envelopes you in person.

The primary bedroom features another impressive light fixture, textural walls, and a lovely wood ceiling. Rich textiles and patterns fill the room.

Cozy Lounge

Perhaps the lounge is my personal favorite room in this tour? I love how bright it feels, with lighter wood and a close knit floor plan, perfectly bright & cozy around the corner fireplace. It also skews a bit more modern.

Bedrooms & Loft

Bedroom in Mountain Ski Chalet

There are plenty of bedrooms and guest spaces to enjoy in this mountain retreat, but here are a few snapshots that gained my attention. From beautiful wallpaper in the bathroom to cozy built-in beds in the loft, there are many vignettes to snuggle up and enjoy.

Something about this primary palette in a mountain home feels classic and organict to me. You might just see some of these repeated in our Utah cabin.

FAQ & Interview with Jennifer

Jennifer Miller Design Studio
Where did you find inspiration for this project?

The inspiration mainly came from the property itself, highlighting the breathtaking views of the Sawtooth Mountains and the Wood River Valley. I wanted the home to feel like it was in constant conversation with its surroundings. The existing foundation provided us with beautiful natural materials to work with, so my approach was to respect those elements while introducing a lighter, more modern feel. We also took inspiration from the homeowner’s lifestyle. They wanted a home that felt both luxurious and completely relaxed, a place where they could unwind after a day on the slopes.

Describe your signature design or aesthetic.

My work centers on understanding how people live and designing environments that reflect their personalities. I love the interplay of textures, soft fabrics contrasted with raw materials, sleek surfaces paired with natural, organic elements. I always strive for a balance of elegance and comfort. The goal is to create spaces that are both beautiful and highly livable. Every project should feel personal and authentic to those who call it home.Ski Chalet Entryway Styling with Branches

Was designing a ski chalet challenging- or were there any specifics you needed to consider for the location and climate?

The location definitely influenced our choices. At that elevation, natural light can be quite intense but also fleeting depending on the time of year, so maximizing it while creating warmth was essential. We needed durable materials that could endure the climate and be easy to maintain. The main challenge was opening up what had been a series of dark, compartmentalized rooms and creating a sense of flow while preserving those cozy, intimate moments that define a mountain retreat. Each space had to feel connected but also distinct.

What was your favorite room in this home to design?

The living room holds a special place for me. It’s where everything comes together. The sweeping mountain views through the large windows, the stone fireplace anchoring the space, and all the layers of texture and comfort we brought in. It’s really the heart of the home. Getting the balance right between that grand scale and intimate warmth was so satisfying. When you’re sitting there with the mountain peaks framed perfectly in the windows, it feels like the architecture, the interiors, and the landscape are all working together.Sun Valley Mountain Ski Chalet Home Tour

What are some easy ways to add warmth or rustic charm to cold weather or snowy properties?

Layering is essential. Textured rugs immediately ground a space and add warmth underfoot. I love bringing in plenty of soft fabrics like throws, pillows, and upholstery made from natural fibers such as wool, linen, and mohair. Lighting is also transformative. Use warm-toned bulbs and add multiple sources at different heights. These elements work together to create that cozy, enveloping feeling you crave when it’s snowy outside.

Do you have any design takeaways from this project for readers?

Work with what you have. The bones of this home were already remarkable and sometimes the best design decision is knowing what to preserve and what to refine. Also, don’t be afraid to open things up. We removed walls to create flow and bring in light, and it completely transformed the feel of the home. I recommend investing in custom pieces where it matters. Thoughtful, well-crafted elements that were created specifically for your space will always elevate the overall design.Sun Valley Ski Chalet Hallway with Large Organic Art

What is your best styling tip?

Edit, edit, edit. It’s so tempting to fill every surface, but restraint is what allows each piece to breathe and make an impact. Choose things you truly love and that have meaning, then give them space to shine.
