Is Avocado’s Wool Mattress As Dreamy As It Sounds? 2025 Review

Summary: I slept cool through the night and woke up feeling truly restored, thanks to Avocado’s Wool Mattress. Handcrafted with ethically sourced, GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton, it naturally regulates temperature, wicks away moisture, and provides antimicrobial protection. With its medium feel, it strikes the perfect balance of being both supportive and cushioned. As a side sleeper, I felt cozy and cradled in the best way. Every material and detail feels thoughtful, luxurious, and intentionally breathable. A mattress is a big investment — both financially and for your sleep quality. And Avocado gives me peace of mind with certifications that uphold the highest standards of health, safety, and sustainability.

What I Love:

  • Avocado’s delivery and setup were a breeze, and I liked having the white-glove option for easy unpacking and removal of my old mattress.
  • I appreciate that the Wool Mattress is made with ethically sourced, GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton, completely free of latex and foam, which feels like a cleaner choice for someone like me who values organic materials.
  • The mattress kept me cool and comfortable all night with natural temperature regulation and moisture-wicking properties.
  • I also love knowing it’s antimicrobial and resistant to dust mites, which gives me extra peace of mind about my sleep environment.

Things To Keep In Mind:

  • Since it’s made with wool, it may not work for those with wool allergies or sensitivities.
  • I did notice a faint natural wool scent at first, which could be more noticeable if you’re sensitive to smells.

As a very hot and light sleeper, I’m always on the hunt for products that can help me get deeper rest. I thought sheets and comforters were the main culprits behind sweaty nights and less-than-great sleep scores, but after trying the Avocado Wool Mattress, I realized my mattress was the missing link that had been keeping me awake, counting sheep (pun intended).

Avocado’s Wool Mattress is making me sentimental for my upbringing on a farm with sheep.

When I told my friends I was reviewing a wool mattress, three of them asked the same question: “Won’t that be hot?” Quite the opposite. Wool naturally regulates temperature and wicks moisture, creating a breathable, cool sleep surface — ideal for hot sleepers like me.

I grew up on a farm in Massachusetts and took a lamb to school in kindergarten for show-and-tell. So, to say the least, sheep have a special place in my heart and my story. One of my first questions about the wool mattress was where the wool comes from. Avocado has best-in-class sustainability practices, and this product is no exception. Made with ethically sourced, GOTS-certified organic wool from India, it meets the Responsible Wool Standard for ethical treatment and sustainable land practices. That kind of transparency and accountability really matters to me, especially when it comes to animal products.

My Avocado Wool Mattress Review

The investment

Given we spend half our lives in bed, mattresses are a big investment — for our sleep quality, overall health, and our wallets. After graduating from college in 2015, I purchased my first one from Tuft & Needle. I had the base model, which was basically just a large piece of foam that came in a box (and felt very innovative at the time!). A decade ago, it cost $575 for a queen, so when this new mattress rang up at almost 4x the price, I became starkly aware of the reality of our ever-growing cost of living.

“Given we spend half our lives in bed, mattresses are a big investment — for our sleep quality, overall health, and our wallets.”

In terms of today’s mattress pricing landscape, the Avocado Wool Mattress sits on the more expensive side. However, for the quality of the materials, craftsmanship, comfort (more on that soon!), and the level of certification Avocado has, the mattress definitely feels worth the price.

As a renter in my 30s, who has lived in eight apartments between Boston, St. Louis, and Los Angeles — and even shipped my furniture from state to state — I’ve noticed the high-quality pieces where I made a bigger upfront investment have stayed with me, whereas the cheaper pieces have come and gone. Given this personal reflection, I’ve seen that spending more now, often means saving more later on replacements and upgrades. And honestly, sleep is one area of my life I’m not willing to cut corners on anymore.

Delivery & set up

After placing my order, the Avocado logistics team made it easy to schedule my in-home delivery via text. I picked a day that worked for me and was able to track my delivery through a convenient link they sent. The mattress arrived in a box, and the delivery team graciously carried it into the house for me. The box is deceptively small but heavy, with the shrink-wrapped mattress inside — it’s definitely a two-person job!

I would recommend the “In-Home Delivery & Setup” (which you can select during checkout under “Shipping”) — I promise the additional $249 will be worth your convenience. This white-glove service includes everything from bringing your new mattress into the house, unboxing it, removing the packaging, and taking away your old mattress. With standard shipping, your mattress will only be delivered to your doorstep — which could be fine if you have another person around to help you set up! Personally, I loved not having to think about anything other than which sheets I was putting on first.

First impressions

This mattress is beautiful, soft, and truly feels thoughtfully designed — it’s needle tufted by hand, and I can tell! There is also a convenient handle on the side, so if you need to adjust or move it, it’s easier to maneuver. The wool is cushioned over a premium layer of natural alpaca, and enveloped by organic cotton canvas on all sides.

I got the king size, which feels like such a luxurious upgrade from my old foam queen mattress. I let the mattress breathe for a few hours after coming out of the box to take its full shape — and when I finally lay down on it for the first test, I was pleasantly surprised by the soft-yet-structured feel of the mattress.

Sleep

I made the poor decision of waiting to put my sheets on it until it was time for bed — nothing is worse than having a wrestling match with your fitted sheet when you’re ready to close your eyes. But the payoff was worth it when I got under the covers and realized maybe I never knew what it was like to sleep on a nice mattress until now.

The wool molded to my body while still providing support, and since I’m a side sleeper, this feels good on my hips. It has a 1-inch layer of microcoils that gives extra responsiveness if you change positions or move around at night. Avocado’s website calls this mattress “a true medium feel,” and I agree with this description.

On top of being a very warm sleeper, I also have a 12lb chihuahua who sleeps under the covers, really turning up the heat. Usually, I have kicked the covers off by morning, but the wool did its thing to regulate the temperature, and we slept comfortably through the night.

What I learned about wool is that the fibers react to changes in temperature and humidity, expanding or contracting to maintain a stable microclimate around your body (how cool!). That’s why wool is known for keeping you warm in the winter but cool in the summer.

I didn’t notice any off-gassing, but there was a scent that caught my attention. Maybe I have a keen nose from growing up on the farm, but I do notice that the mattress smells ever so slightly of wool. I asked a friend if they could smell it, but they replied, “I don’t know what wool smells like” — so clearly it’s not detectable to everyone. For me, it’s nostalgic and comforting — but if you’re sensitive or allergic to wool, I would recommend one of Avocado’s organic latex mattresses instead.

My final verdict

The Avocado Wool Mattress is a game-changer for hot sleepers like me — soft, supportive, and surprisingly cool through the night. I love that it’s made with ethically sourced, organic wool and feels luxurious without any synthetic materials. If you’re looking for a comfortable, breathable mattress with a medium feel that actually helps you sleep better, this one’s a win.

I knew I loved avocado on my toast — I had no idea how much I’d love it on my bed.
