Why We’re Captivated by These Majestic Trees
From their ancient lineage to their breathtaking blooms, Magnolias hold a special place in gardens and landscapes around the world. Available in a range of shapes and sizes, Magnolias offer something special for everyone. If you’re looking to add a touch of magic to your garden, consider planting a Magnolia tree.
A Symphony of Blooms:
Let’s start with the obvious: the flowers. Magnolia blossoms are nothing short of spectacular. Imagine large, velvety petals unfurling in shades of pristine white, delicate pink, or even rich purples and sunny yellows. The sheer size and beauty of these blooms are a sight to behold, a true herald of spring’s arrival. And let’s not forget the fragrance! Many magnolia varieties fill the air with a sweet, intoxicating scent that adds another layer of enchantment.
A Touch of History:
Magnolias are ancient plants, their history stretching back millions of years. This deep connection to the past lends them a sense of gravitas and timelessness. Planting a magnolia is like adding a living piece of history to your garden. Their classic beauty transcends trends, offering a sense of enduring elegance.
Variety for Every Garden:
One of the best things about magnolias is their versatility. Whether you have a sprawling estate or a small urban garden, there’s a magnolia for you. You can find evergreen varieties for year-round greenery or deciduous types that offer seasonal changes, including stunning autumn foliage.
More Than Just a Pretty Face:
Magnolias aren’t just beautiful; they’re beneficial too. Their flowers attract pollinators like bees, playing a vital role in supporting local ecosystems. They also provide shelter and nesting sites for birds, adding to the biodiversity of your garden.
Relatively Easy Care:
While they look like they require a lot of fuss, most magnolias are relatively low-maintenance. With the right planting location and a little care, they can thrive for generations.
Shop Magnolias:
A compact deciduous magnolia, prized for its vibrant, purple-pink, tulip-shaped flowers. Blooming in mid to late spring, its large, lightly fragrant flowers create a stunning display. Perfect as a specimen plant or in mixed borders
Growing as a multistemmed large shrub or small tree, Magnolia × soulangeana has alternate, simple, shiny, dark green oval-shaped leaves on stout stems. Its flowers emerge dramatically on a bare tree in early spring, with the deciduous leaves expanding shortly thereafter, lasting through summer until autumn
A small, deciduous shrub or tree prized for its early spring blooms. With dark green leaves that turn yellow in the autumn. The highlight of stellata is its profusion of star-like white flowers, each with narrow, delicate petals, creating a stunning display before the leaves emerge.
A compact, upright, deciduous magnolia known for its deep wine-red flowers. Its goblet-shaped blooms appear in early spring, often reblooming in late summer, adding extended beauty to the landscape. The flowers, lightly fragrant, contrast beautifully with the tree’s glossy green foliage. Its manageable size, stunning colour, and long flowering period make it a favourite for small spaces, borders, or containers.
Heaven Scent (Magnolia ‘Heaven Scent’) is a low-maintenance, dark-leaved, deciduous, small to medium-sized magnolia tree. It produces pink flowers with a magenta stripe at the base in April and May and a rich scent.
Magnolia Kobus is a very hardy, versatile tree but unlike other magnolias it can take about 15 years to reach its full floral potential. Until then you can expect a good display of very large, elegant, white flowers from as early as March that can reach up to 10cm across. Once 15 years are reached the floral display becomes sensational.
Magnolia grandiflora ‘Gallissonnière’
Magnolia grandiflora ‘Gallissonnière’ is a cultivar of the evergreen Bullbay Magnolia, celebrated for its majestic stature and large, fragrant flowers. This tree is prized for its glossy, leathery leaves with rusty-brown undersides, providing year-round ornamental appeal. The tree produces creamy-white, cup-shaped flowers with a delightful lemon fragrance. The blossoms stand out against the backdrop of the dark green foliage, creating a stunning visual display.
Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’
A charming evergreen with dark green leaves and a contrasting brown underside provides visual interest throughout the year. During late spring to summer the small cream flowers appear in the classic magnolia shape with showy petals and a sweet scent. With its dense, compact, and upright growth it would make a lovely addition to a small garden or as an eye-catching focal point in a border.
Planting Advice
The best time to plant Magnolias is between autumn and spring, whenever the ground isn’t frozen. If planted correctly, Magnolias are fairly low maintenance, when in the ground. Most magnolias prefer:
- Full sun
- Fertile, moist, well-drained soil
- Slightly acidic or neutral conditions
- Sheltered position
If you are growing a Magnolia in a container they will need regular watering and feeding during the growing season.
