There’s been a lot of talk lately about the toxic materials that can be found in kitchenware, whether that be the brominated flame retardants (BFRs) found in black items like spatulas and spoons or the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) present in many non-stick pans. In an effort to clean up my kitchen in my new apartment, I decided to try out the new Made In CeramiClad 7-piece set. The pans offer the high-powered heating of a stainless steel plus the forgiving surface of a non-stick, all without the harmful chemicals. Made In calls it the ultimate clean-eating, even-heating pan, and after cooking with the line for the last month, I have to agree.

I’ve used Made In pans before. Their stainless steel conducts at ultra high temperatures, which are key to searing without sticking, but honestly, I can be a bit of a lazy cook and need something simpler to clean up. Stainless can just be unforgiving, especially when making eggs and omelettes. Plus I love the easy cleanup of a non-stick. Though the CeramiClad pans aren’t dishwasher-safe, that’s not a huge issue for me, as I don’t have one anyhow. They can be easily cleaned using a non-abrasive sponge, soap, and water, and stay looking nice if you make sure to dry them off immediately.

The new CeramiClad line is made in Italy of premium 5-ply construction and is oven-safe up to 550°F, meaning you can finish dishes safely as long as you’re not broiling at a high heat. It’s compatible with gas, electric, and induction cooktops—the latter of which we’ll start seeing a lot more of here in California as gas stoves are phased out.

One thing worth noting is that the CeramiClad pans need to be stored with a towel in between other pans so as to not scratch the ceramic lining, or you can buy one of their pan protectors. And although they aren’t cheap, they’re definitely a good investment for home cooks.
The 7-piece set—free of PFOA, lead, cadmium, and other toxins—includes the Frying Pan, Stock Pot, Saucepan, and Sauté Pan, plus three interchangeable lids, which is really all I need for my daily cooking routine. It’s on sale right now for $599.
