Timeless Holiday Greenery You’ll Use Every Year

The holiday season always sneaks up on us, doesn’t it? Every year, I promise myself I’ll start planning early to make decorating less choatic- and when I actually do, it makes the holiday season feel so much more relaxed and enjoyable. If you’re hoping for an stress-free holiday this year, I’d recommend planning and prepping your greenery now. This doesn’t have to be extravagant… a simple note in your phone or a couple inspiration photos will do. Or, if you’re planning to replace or update anything- grab it now before the good stuff sells out. Wayfair has become one of my favorite sources for timeless holiday greenery that looks beautifully realistic, works with any aesthetic, and holds up year after year. From lush garlands to classic wreaths and pre-lit trees, these pieces create an elevated holiday foundation without having to clean up the mess that accompanies live greenery.

From decorating the kitchen for the holidays to styling the mantel in our holiday decorated living room, I like to go all out with my Christmas decor. I stick to the classics, but vary the color palette each year. The thing that remains the same is the greenery… I always begin with that, using it as a base. Here’s how!

Why Invest in Faux Greenery?

Greenery is the foundation of any holiday decor vignette. Whether you’re styling your mantel, framing your front door, or layering your dining table or sideboard, investing in high-quality pieces makes everything feel intentional and cohesive. Here’s why I always opt for realistic, reusable greenery:

  • It lasts for years – It’s a sustainable, long-term option that looks great every season.
  • It’s low maintenance – No watering, sweeping, or replacing dried-out branches.
  • It looks authentic – Modern faux greenery is incredibly detailed and lifelike.
  • It’s flexible – You can easily mix and match pieces as your style evolves.

Designer Picks: Holiday Greenery from Wayfair

Classic Garland

A well-made garland is one of the most versatile holiday decor elements you can own. It instantly dresses up staircases, mantels, framed doorways, windows, and large pieces of furniture. I like to choose wired garlands that can easily be shaped and layered for an organic look.

Designer Tip: Combine two garlands for extra fullness, then add pinecones, dried orange slices, or tie ribbon for added dimension.

Realistic Wreaths

Wreaths set the tone from the moment someone walks through your door. Wayfair carries a beautiful selection… from simple cedar to mixed pine and magnolia, these all look timeless and fresh-cut. I use wreaths both indoors and out.

Try This: Add velvet or silk ribbon for a tailored, designer feel that complements your overall color palette.

Christmas Trees

If you’re in the market for a new Christmas tree, now is the time to shop. My curated picks include everything from slim and wispy trees to full showstoppers that look incredibly realistic. Whatever tree you land on (if you’re going with pre-lit)… make sure the light temperature is warm. That’s a must!

Thoughts on flocking: I also liked flocked trees. You can add flocking to any tree, or you can search the following styles in flocked options. These are the shapes I tend to gravitate toward…

Tips for Decorating with Greenery

  • Mix textures: Combine pine, cedar, and other greenery varieties for a layered, natural effect.
  • Keep it cohesive: Repeat similar greenery types throughout your home for a tailored look.
  • Go tonal: Try a monochromatic palette… or stick to 2-3 colors that work well together for a classic Christmas aesthetic.
  • Plan early: Order greenery in October or early November to avoid sell-outs and shipping delays.

FAQ

Can I mix faux and real greenery?

You certainly can! I don’t… simply because I don’t want to deal with the mess, but blending does add fragrance, texture, and authenticity.

When will you start decorating for the holidays?

Honestly- I’m over how early decorating begins… and it seems to speed up every year. I enjoy celebrating the season we’re currently in, as the weather gradually changes. I usually begin decorating in mid-November so everything feels festive by Thanksgiving. It’s early enough to enjoy the season without the last-minute rush. Then, I typically enjoy my tree and decor past the New Year… so I’m a little late on beginning and taking it down. Do whatever feels best to you! Bottom line- don’t feel pressure to start early, if you’re not feeling it.

How should I store faux greenery after the holidays?

Gently wrap each piece in paper or bubble wrap, then store it in a cool, dry place. Avoid crushing branches so they keep their shape. I keep mine in these plastic totes.

How do I make faux greenery look more realistic?

Fluff and shape each branch, and incorporate real elements- like pinecones, ribbon, or dried oranges for added depth. Mix multiple varieties together for a textural, full look.
