Traditional Christmas Staircase Garland Ideas

How to attach garland to stairs the easy way for a traditional Christmas look

Did I renovate our staircase and entryway just so I could decorate it for Christmas…

It’s not the only reason obviously but I would be lying if I didn’t admit that I have been dreaming of what these stairs would look like with gorgeous Christmas garland ever since we moved in.

Luckily this staircase/entryway makeover wrapped up just in time to start decorating for Christmas.

When I was designing this space I envisioned a classic looking board and batten with a deep rich stain color. I think we definitely hit the mark and I wanted the Christmas decor and garland in this area to follow the classic route too.

There are so many different Christmas garland staircase ideas and types out there but this year I really wanted to lean into a simple, classic, and traditional style.

Sometimes simple is best in my opinion!

The most important thing when adding garland to the staircase is the garland itself.

I understand that garland isn’t the most budget friendly Christmas decor around but if you invest in quality pieces you will be happier in the long run, trust me.

Every year I try to buy one or two new strands of quality garland to add to my collection. This way the cost is manageable and slowly but surely I will be able to put garland everywhere I want it!

This year I bought two pieces of this Norfolk Pine garland for the staircase. Each piece is 180″ which fits our staircase perfectly.

For our staircase I layered two strands of the Norfolk Pine garland on top of each other for a really full look.

I started by installing the first piece at the top of the staircase. I used floral wire to attach the garland to the banister. In the past I have used this Velcro wrap to attach garland to the mantel and I like that method also.

After I have the top of the garland strand attached I just work my way down the banister, adding floral wire to different sections.

Once the first piece is installed I simply layer the second piece on top of the first. I attach the garland to the second piece with floral wire as well.

Adding Ribbon to Staircase Garland

The garland is so pretty all on its own but ribbon makes everything a little bit better!

For this traditional themed staircase garland idea I chose classic red velvet ribbon to make bows out of.

I am not one of those fancy bow makers but I think this simple bow with long ends looks very elegant.

Each bow is attached with, you guessed it, floral wire! Three bows completed this staircase garland look and I could not be happier with how it turned out.

Traditional Entryway Table Vignette

The staircase garland is so beautiful I wish I could leave it up all year. I love how traditionally classic it looks.

For the rest of the entryway’s Christmas decor I wanted to stay true to a traditional, elegant look.

I was very excited to add Christmas decor to our new entryway table. I kept it simple by adding textured ornaments to a milk glass bowl.

These ornaments were a DIY from last year as a way to repurpose some old random ornaments I had laying around.

In a tall ceramic vase I added some burgundy stems for a pop of color.

I hung some gold bells from the drawer knob also and every time the front door opens they jingle a little which is sweet.

Underneath the entryway table I added a few red knit stockings to the extra pillows that were already being stored there.

A few other subtle Christmas touches I added to the entryway are this burgundy flameless candle stick. This is my favorite brand of flameless candles and I have different ones scattered throughout our home.

The best part about these flameless candles (besides the safety aspect) is that they can be set with a timer. So every evening at 5pm our house turns into a cozy candlelit sanctuary.

I keep these tall boots here all year long for when I go feed the chickens in the morning so I figured if they are going to be there they mine as well count as Christmas decor! These Christmas stems add a little whimsy to an ordinary item.

For about 10 minutes I debated adding some ribbon and winter prints to our newly added hanging gallery wall… but I literally put it up about a month ago and I just could not bring myself to redo it so soon.

This view into our dining room makes me so happy now that we added this stained header to the opening. It makes my heart so full to have another space complete and our house becoming our home.

Decorating this staircase and entryway with classic and traditional Christmas touches definitely feels like the right move.

Hopefully this inspires your traditional and classic Christmas decorating!
