A Green Escape
Bamboo often gets a bad rep for being invasive, but with careful planning and the right varieties, it can be a stunning and beneficial addition to your garden.
A Vertical Statement:
Bamboo brings an instant sense of drama and height to any garden. Its tall, slender stems create a visually striking vertical element, adding depth and texture to your landscape. Whether you’re aiming for a tropical paradise or a minimalist modern design, bamboo’s graceful presence can elevate your garden’s aesthetic.
Privacy and Screening:
Need to create a natural privacy screen? Bamboo is your answer! Fast-growing and dense, it quickly forms a living wall, shielding your garden from prying eyes and unwanted noise. Choose clumping varieties for a contained screen, or use root barriers with running bamboo for larger areas.
Windbreak and Erosion Control:
Bamboo’s strong, flexible stems make it an excellent windbreak, protecting delicate plants from harsh gusts. Its extensive root system also helps stabilize soil, preventing erosion on slopes and banks.
A Sustainable Choice:
Bamboo is a sustainability superstar. Its rapid growth and minimal need for pesticides or fertilizers make it an eco-friendly choice for your garden. Growing bamboo can contribute to carbon sequestration and reduce your environmental footprint.
Versatility in Design:
Bamboo comes in a wide range of sizes, colours, and textures, offering endless possibilities for garden design. From dwarf varieties perfect for containers to towering giants that create a lush jungle feel, there’s a bamboo for every space and style.
Shop Bamboos:
A popular statement piece for patios, this bamboo makes an architectural statement with its upright slightly arching canes adorned by a soft flush of lush green leaves. It grows to a moderate size and has a dense bushy clump forming habit. Would look great in a large pot on a patio, screening, or to give a flourish of soft green for a small garden.
Large, evergreen bamboo forming dense clumps about 3-4m, of deep green canes. Leaves are glossy green and blue-green beneath and 15-18cm long. This bamboo is perfect for privacy screening and blocking road noise.
A graceful evergreen bamboo producing large clumps of bright green canes 2.5-3.5m high becoming yellowish with age and exposure.
Phyllostachys aureosulcata f. spectabilis
One of the more popular bamboos due to its unique look and hardy nature. Its brightly coloured canes are a golden yellow with a flash of green stripe in the groove and occasional zigzags in the lower stems. A great choice for a tall privacy screening, along a back boarder or potting up on a patio.
Commonly known as black bamboo due to the nature of the young bright green canes turning a deep black in maturity. Making a striking contrast from the long elegant green leaves jutting out sporadically. The nigra bamboo is one of the less invasive types, but if you want to restrict its spread, planting with a non-perishable barrier is suggested.
Tips for Growing Bamboo:
- Soil: Bamboo prefers well-drained soil.
- Sunlight: Most varieties thrive in full sun to partial shade.
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods.
- Containment: Use root barriers or plant clumping varieties to prevent unwanted spread.
