Why I Chose The Avocado Kids Mattress And Furniture (Review)

Summary:  I bought my first Avocado mattress when I was pregnant and about to become a mother. Five years later, I’ve gladly chosen their Eco Organic Mattress and Kids Furniture for my kids. Avocado’s safety, sustainability, and quality standards are unmatched, and I can’t rave about this brand that’s leading the industry in responsible manufacturing enough.

What I Love:

  • Avocado is leading the industry with their impressive safety and sustainability standards, giving me peace of mind as my kids spend one-third of their childhood sleeping on their mattresses
  • Each furniture piece is intentionally crafted with heirloom quality and are designed to last a lifetime
  • Their in-home delivery and set up is a busy mother’s dream come true

Things To Note:

  • These pieces are an investment, and the price reflects this, which may be prohibitive for some. However, when cared for, each piece prices out affordably over the lifespan of each product.

When I moved into my house seven years ago, it was just me. I was 25 and the only piece of furniture I had was a hand-me-down bed frame and mattress from my grandparents’ guest room, which we moved just three houses north from their house into the very first place I would call my own.

On my first night in the house, I remember lying awake in what would become my children’s bedroom, contemplating whether I should spend our wedding registry cash on a $400 vacuum cleaner. “So this is adulthood,” I thought. It was truly a coming-of-age moment.

Mere weeks later, my then fiancé, now husband moved in. Two years later, we brought our first child, a daughter, home from the hospital, and our son came along two years after that.

Just before we became parents for the first time, we decided to upgrade from that inherited mattress and invest in a brand new one of our very own. Back when clocking responsible brands was just a hobby (before it was my job here at The Good Trade), I had my eye on Avocado. I knew the brand was the gold standard for organic, safe materials, sustainable business practices, and manufacturing. So, at eight months pregnant, I hit purchase on their signature Eco Organic Mattress — another coming-of-age moment.

About Avocado

Avocado Mattress embraces a deeply rooted ethical and sustainability ethos, and incorporates these as the foundation of every facet of its operations, including owning its latex farms and wool supply chains to trace its products from raw material to bedroom. The brand’s manufacturing in its Los Angeles facility is powered by 100% renewable energy, and it maintains full carbon-neutral certification through Climate Neutral. As a certified B Corporation with a high score of 113 (the average is 50), Avocado participates in meaningful industry-led change, donating through 1% for the Planet, adhering to fair trade standards, and regularly reviewing its communities, materials, and manufacturing practices.

We’ve covered the brand extensively and at every turn have observed from sourcing to production, the company emphasizes transparent, organic, and materials that meet rigorous certifications that reinforce its commitments. The mattresses and bedding are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), verifying organic content in textiles and latex, along with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for responsible forest management of wood components. On top of that, Avocado holds health- and safety-based certifications such as OEKO‑TEX® STANDARD 100 for finished mattresses, EWG VERIFIED for its entire mattress line, and MADE SAFE® and GREENGUARD® Gold for low chemical emissions — all underscoring a commitment to human health as well as environmental well-being.

Delivery & setup

Little did I know, just five years after buying my first Avocado mattress, I’d be touring their factory, dining with their wonderful team, and reviewing their products in an official capacity. I also didn’t know I’d have two children at home — a two- and four-year-old — who share a room and giggle themselves to sleep most nights.

When their twin mattresses and furniture arrived, I had an idea of what to expect since I’d done this several years prior. Their delivery team was incredibly communicative, scheduling drop off on a day convenient for me, and making setup a breeze by literally doing everything. I opened the front door, and they did the rest, carefully navigating the tight corners of our house that are adorned with fragile crown molding and meticulously placing the dresser and nightstand precisely where I wanted them. They even helped me move our glider to the other side of the room for a better fit.

Eco Organic Twin Mattresses & Waterproof Mattress Protector

After they left, I sat on the bottom bunk and admired the pristine mattresses. When we bought our queen-size Eco Organic Mattress in 2020, I was surprised by how soft and pillowy the mattress itself was. Not just when I would get into bed at the end of a long day, but when I lay down on the bare mattress. To illustrate how soft the mattress is, I’ll share that I was known to pull a blanket over me and sleep directly on the mattress when I was too tired and pregnant to put the sheets back on the bed after a wash.

With the growing body of research around how PFAS and VOCs impact growing bodies, it’s important to me to reduce our exposure to these chemicals when possible. Conventionally made mattresses can contain high levels of PFAS and VOCs that build up in our bodies over time and are linked to skin irritation at best, and endocrine (hormone) disruption, among other health conditions, at worst. Investing in a mattress that holds noteworthy certifications can significantly reduce our toxic burden, especially as we spend an average of one-third of our lives in bed.

Speaking of how much time we spend in bed, Avocado’s mattresses are designed to last 25 years and are covered by a 10-year warranty. I’ve learned from experience that a waterproof mattress protector is an essential piece of the puzzle to ensure longevity, which is why I highly recommend adding these to your cart as well.

Kids Dresser & Nightstand

Avocado’s furniture is made of 100% FSC-certified solid wood and topped with a non-toxic finish. I’ve also seen with my own two eyes how the brand uses every bit of scrap material for upcycled product development and manufacturing new pieces like their zero-waste coffee table.

The Kids Dresser and Nightstand are functional and sculpturally beautiful, adding class and elegance without sacrificing durability. These pieces are heirloom quality, and I know they’ll have a place in our home one way or another for the rest of our lives, and we’ll gladly use them until one of the kids wants them someday. Plus, the slow-close drawers are an overstimulated mom’s dream come true!

Our family typically opts for secondhand, solid wood furniture to balance sustainability, safety, and cost. However, if you’re in the market for new furniture, Avocado’s standards are unmatched.

Is Avocado’s kids mattresses, dresser & nightstand worth it?

Avocado’s Eco Organic Twin mattress is priced at $699, and I know my kids will use these mattresses for at least the next ten years. After doing the math, this breaks down to paying $5.82 per month per mattress. Avocado has also just launched twin mattresses for bunk beds and trundle beds in packs of two at a discounted rate, making the monthly cost even lower.

While the Kids Dresser and Nightstand are an investment, you’ll have peace of mind knowing their materials will stand the test of time while also not polluting the air in your home. They’re classic, durable, and will withstand even the most rambunctious of playtimes.

As noted more specifically above, Avocado mattresses hold certifications that meet the highest standards for safety and sustainability on the market. I trusted the brand with my growing, pregnant body then, and there isn’t a brand I trust more with my kids’ growing bodies now.
