Cozy Winter Bedroom Ideas

Cozy winter bedroom ideas from decor to winter bedding on a budget

Is there anything better than getting into a cozy, fluffy bed in winter time?

Something about the cold weather makes me want to retreat to our bedroom in the evenings (also around mid-day but I try to exercise self-control).

At the beginning of the new year I like to clean our mattress and also update our bedding. It feels like a fresh start for the new year.

Here are a few cozy winter bedroom ideas to help you create a winter sanctuary in your own home.

Warm and Inviting Bedroom Decor

Creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in your bedroom is essential for enhancing comfort and relaxation during the winter months.

Bedroom Lighting

One key element to consider is the use of soft lighting to create a cozy ambiance. Opt for warm, dimmable lighting and make use of bedside lamps, string lights, or candles to add a soft glow to the room.

During the winter months I swap our bedside lamps to bulbs that are 2000K to 2700K for an extra cozy glow.

Cozy Rugs and Textiles

Plush rugs can also add warmth and comfort to your bedroom. Choose a soft, thick rug in a neutral or soothing color to create a cozy foundation for your space.

If you don’t want to use a large rug under the bed you can instead add a rug next to your bed or in front of a seating area in the bedroom.

When it comes to textures, incorporating comforting materials such as faux fur blankets, velvet throw pillow covers, and heavy quilts can instantly elevate the cozy factor in your bedroom. Mix and match different textures to add depth and visual interest to your space.

Winter Florals and Decor

For our bedroom decor I like to incorporate cooler hues for the winter months. Like these lavender colored faux thistles and this tall black vase.

This vase was actually a simple DIY project I tackled last year, it used to be clear glass without the handles.

Once the rest of our black and white family photo prints arrive I will be adding more of them to the bedroom too. There is just something about a black and white photo that feels cozy and intimate

I also incorporate candles in winter scents like pine, tobacco, or cinnamon. You could even make a winter smelling room spray mixing essential oils and distilled water.

These elements all work together to create a harmonious and relaxing atmosphere that promotes rest and rejuvenation.

For me the goal is always to create a fluffy, cozy, expensive hotel-esque type bed situation.

The fluffier the better, but also it needs to be budget friendly…

Layering Bedding

I like to start with this cozy fitted sheet, top sheet, and pillowcase set. I won’t lie to you, these pieces are the only things I splurge on when it comes to bedding. That’s because they are just so dang soft I can’t go back to any other type of sheet set.

After the top sheet I added a light quilt in this pretty gray violet color. We really love having a light quilt because we are hot sleepers and sometimes just the quilt layer is enough.

On top of the quilt I layer this fluffy duvet and white duvet cover. I tend to stick with white for the duvet cover color because it’s easiest to wash and classic looking.

At the end of our bed I layer on another heavier quilt in a cool color. This quilt is actually the same one I use for spring because on the other side is a really beautiful bird pattern in light blue. Here is an option similar to the one I have!

Bed Pillows

The amount of pillows someone chooses to have on a bed feels like a deep insight into their personality. I don’t know what it says about my personality that I like to have all the pillows but I am sure it says something…

We only sleep with four pillows actually on the bed though so there’s that. I highly recommend these pillows from Amazon, they are super plush and very budget friendly. We have had them for two years and they have not lost their plushness.

Euro pillows are beautiful and add an elevated look to the bedding. Again for these pillow covers I stick with white so that I can use them for every season.

Next I add these quilted purple shams to add depth and texture. Followed by this faux fur lumbar pillow that feels extra cozy.

If there was a meeting for people who love throw pillow covers I would have to attend…

Since there is not, I own more than my fair share. The velvet pink throw pillow covers add warmth to the bedding and will be perfect for the month of February. The vintage inspired design of the pillow cover in the middle adds a fun pop of pattern to the winter bedding.

Winter Bedding Color Scheme Ideas

Just in case you are wanting to add a new winter bedding color scheme to your bedroom, here are some of my favorite options:

  • Deep blues, such as navy or indigo, can create a sense of calm and serenity in the bedroom. These colors are reminiscent of the night sky and can help promote relaxation and restful sleep. Pairing deep blues with lighter shades like soft grays or whites can prevent the room from feeling too dark or overwhelming.
  • Rich burgundies add a touch of warmth and sophistication to a winter bedroom. This deep, red hue can create a sense of luxury and coziness, perfect for creating a welcoming retreat from the cold outside. Burgundy pairs well with neutral tones like cream, beige, or taupe, creating a harmonious and inviting color palette.
  • Warm neutrals, such as creamy whites, soft beige, and warm grays, provide a versatile and timeless backdrop for a winter bedroom. These colors can help create a sense of warmth and comfort while allowing for flexibility in adding pops of color or texture through accessories like throw pillows, blankets, or rugs.

Overall, combining deep blues, rich burgundies, or warm neutrals in a winter bedroom color scheme can help create a cozy and inviting space that promotes relaxation and comfort during the colder months.

Adding Pattern Pieces to Winter Bedding

When mixing patterns into bedding, here are a few things I like to keep in mind to ensure a cohesive and visually appealing look:

1. Stick to a Color Scheme: Choose a color palette that ties all the patterns together. Select a dominant color and a couple of accent colors that complement each other. This will help create a harmonious and coordinated look.

2. Vary Scale and Type of Patterns: Mix different types of patterns, like stripes and geometric designs, to add visual interest. Make sure to vary the scale of the patterns as well – mix larger prints with smaller ones to create balance.

3. Use Solid Colors as Anchors: Incorporate solid-colored bedding or pillowcases to break up the patterns and provide visual rest. Solid colors can help prevent the overall look from becoming too busy or overwhelming.

4. Limit the Number of Patterns: Avoid using too many different patterns in one bedding set. Stick to a maximum of three patterns to prevent the look from becoming chaotic. That’s the opposite of the vibe we want for this cozy winter bedroom sanctuary.

5. Consider Texture: Mixing different textures along with patterns can add depth and dimension to the bedding. Incorporate materials like velvet, faux fur, or knit blankets to create a tactile and cozy feel.

These are just some things that help me design a bedding set that is visually pleasing and full of character.

Choosing the Right Window Treatments

For our winter bedroom I want light in the morning but also cozy darkness at any given moment. I know those are tall orders for bedroom windows but the right curtains and shades make all the difference.

These curtains are thick, light blocking curtains that look and feel expensive but are actually really budget friendly from Amazon. I have multiple sets of these throughout our home and like to swap between these pale blue ones and a white version in our bedroom. The pale blue fabric fits in perfectly with the cozy winter vibe.

These roman shades are also a budget find from Amazon. They are definitely more for looks than functionality though. I would say they are less for light filtering and more for privacy when down. Really I just like the extra texture they add to the window.

For the winter months especially I opt for curtains that will keep the heat in and the cold out. The electric bill is already not ideal, these curtains help us save at least a little energy.
