My unbiased review of the Bissell Green Hydrosteam Upholstery Cleaner, with pro/cons, and the best method for cleaning upholstery
Did you catch my most recent Facebook Marketplace find? I scored a set of 6 beautiful upholstered dining room chairs for $150!
Our dining room is on the list of upcoming room makeovers but we are really hoping to tackle our primary bathroom renovation first…
However when I found these gorgeous chairs on Facebook Marketplace I knew I had to at least grab them to use in the future makeover.
The chairs themselves are in great condition and the upholstery is also intact just a bit dirty.
Since I have been wanting to purchase a portable upholstery cleaner for a while I figured now was the perfect time!
I did a ton of research and searching before finally purchasing the Bissell Green Hydrosteam Upholstery Cleaner.
Since not everyone has the time or want to, to stalk upholstery cleaner reviews I figured I would share my pros and cons of this one.

What is the Bissell Green Hydrosteam Upholstery Cleaner

This machine is a portable deep cleaner that provides multi-surface cleaning options. The Bissell Green Hydrosteam upholstery cleaner allows you to wash upholstery, carpets, area rugs, and car interiors with a single device.
The biggest difference between this model and other upholstery cleaners is the steam function option.
Cleaning Modes of Bissell Upholstery Cleaner
There are three cleaning settings for different situations:
- The SteamWash Mode is perfect for oily and sticky messes.
- Steam Mode is great for refreshing upholstery, curtains, grout, and tile
- Wash Mode is for spills, stains, and pet accidents
To clean the chairs I used the SteamWash mode because I wanted a combination of refreshing the upholstery and also removing some small stains the chairs had.
Different Cleaning Tools
The Bissell Upholstery cleaner also comes with two tools:

- The 5-inch Tough Stain Tool is great for deep stains and larger areas. This is the tool I mainly used on the upholstered chairs.
- Multi-Surface Tool handles various surfaces including carpet, tile, grout, and more precise stains. I used this tool to spot treat stains on the chairs.
Tips and Tricks for Cleaning Upholstery

When you live with a toddler and multiple dogs you become an expert at getting stains and weird smells out of upholstery.
The first step to properly cleaning any upholstery is to remove as much dirt and debris as possible before using the upholstery cleaner.
I like to start by vacuuming the entire area to remove any loose dirt, if this step is skipped you will end up just pushing that dirt deeper into the fabric while trying to clean it.
It might just be my 30s but cleaning tools that actually work really excite me. I use this pet hair roller on everything and suggest it to everyone I possibly can.

This pet hair roller is a cheap little tool that removes hair from multiple types of fabric. I use it on my couch and throw pillows at least every other day.
Targeting Specific Stains/Smells with Natural Cleaners
Unless I am doing a general refreshing, I usually like to “pre-treat” the area before I actually break out the upholstery cleaner.

Here are some natural cleaning solutions I used:
1. Baking soda: Sprinkle baking soda on the upholstery and let it sit for a few hours before vacuuming it up. Baking soda helps to absorb odors and can also help to lift stains. I use baking soda when I am cleaning our mattress and also on urine stains on the carpet.

2. White vinegar: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray it on the upholstery. Let it sit for a few minutes before busting out the upholstery cleaner. White vinegar is effective at removing odors and can also help to break down stains.
3. Lemon juice: Mix lemon juice with water and spray it on the upholstery. Let it sit for a few minutes before using an upholstery cleaner. Lemon juice has natural antibacterial properties and can help to freshen up upholstery.
4. Essential oils: Add a few drops of essential oils, such as lavender or tea tree oil, to a spray bottle filled with water and spray it on the upholstery. Essential oils have natural antibacterial properties and can help to freshen up upholstery. I usually do this after I’ve cleaned the upholstery.

Tips for Using the Bissell Upholstery Cleaner

Once it came time to actually use the Bissell upholstery cleaner, I filled the water tank with very warm water and some stain solution. The water tank has marks to guide you on how much water and solution to use for different size cleanings.
For this upholstery cleaning job the purpose was to refresh the chair fabric and spot clean the stains.
I started by attaching the multi surface tool and setting the upholstery cleaner to SteamWash Mode.
The multi surface tool was perfect for targeting the small stains and cleaning the crevices of fabric.
After the small stains and intricate areas were taken care of I attached the 5″ stain removing tool. I pulled the trigger to allow steam to cover the entire chair, then made multiple passes with the tool to vacuum up the water.
The Bissell upholstery cleaner did a really great job sucking up the dirty water and only took a few passes before the fabric felt just slightly damp.
I am not going to lie to you, when I saw the dirty water tank after cleaning four of the chairs I was pretty disgusted… The chairs didn’t even look that dirty!

Cleaning the Bissell Upholstery Cleaner
After all six chairs were complete I decided to go ahead and clean the upholstery cleaner so that I didn’t start tearing the house apart looking for more upholstery to clean. “One project at a time” is the mantra I need to recite to myself 24/7.
Cleaning the Bissell upholstery cleaner was super simple! I emptied then rinsed the dirty water tank and replaced it on the machine. The clean water tank was empty so I just rinsed that and wiped out the water.

The biggest plus to the Bissell Green Hydrosteam Upholstery Cleaner is that the 5″ tool nozzle’s top is removable for very easy cleaning! This is a big improvement to the last version of the Little Green machine according to reviews.
Pros
1. The Bissell Green Hydrosteam Upholstery Cleaner is designed for multiple surfaces making it really versatile.
2. It features a built-in water heater that heats up the cleaning solution, helping to remove tough stains and dirt more effectively.
3. The cleaner has a powerful suction that helps to extract excess water and dirt from the surface, leaving it clean and dry.
4. It comes with multiple attachments and tools, such as a crevice tool and a stain tool, to target specific areas and stains for thorough cleaning.
5. The Bissell Green Hydrosteam Upholstery Cleaner is easy to use and maneuver, making it convenient for regular cleaning tasks.
Cons
1. Some users may find the cleaner to be heavy and bulky (it’s 10 pounds), which can make it difficult to transport and store.
2. The water tank capacity may be limited, requiring frequent refills for larger cleaning tasks. One tank full, steam cleaned four chairs.
3. The cleaning solution is purchased separately, adding to the overall cost of using the cleaner.
4. It takes a little time to get used to the steam/water clean function. Sometimes I would be expecting steam and instead water would come out.
